In my lastest issue of the American Rifleman was an article about a young Reb who lost his rifle due to a malfunction and let it at Culp's Hill and after the battle some local folks got it and other artifacts and were in this family for the last 140 some years. This family donated the items to the NPS Gettysburg and will be on display at the new Gettysburg visitor center which is to open sometime in 2008, and the rifle other artifacts will be at the Culp Hill display. As stated above the rifle belonged to a John A. Fallon and he had carved into the gun stock his name and unit "J.A. Fallin Co E 23 VA. and the story go's that a David Starry of the 165th Regiment of Pennsylvania Drafted Militia had picked up the rifle, sword, powder horn, bayonet, drums, and his descendents donated the items to the National Park Service in 1975. These and other items will be on display at the new Museum and visitor center a 139,000 sq.ft. facility slated to open in the spring of 2008. There will be 11 state of the art galleries in the new center, including one on Culp's Hill. Respectfully, Col. Cool, I'm trying to picture where they are going to put it on Culp's Hill.... I know they are moving the visitors center off of the battlefield and restoring the part at Pickett's Charge where it is, back to condition. When I was there about 2 years ago, they were prepping the cyclorama for movement.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() Lieutenant General Scott "The Mad Prussian" Ludwig Commanding Officer, Western Theater, CSA "The Army Commissary" and "The Traveling Blowhard of Virginia" Retired ANV Commander 2004-06 http://www.networkforgood.org Napoleonic Wargaming - INWC
|
