I'm making an effort to learn the HPS system but I'm having a hard time with the maps. Is there an easy way to tell if a river/creek is fordable? It is rather time consuming and wasteful marching a regiment to every hex to find out. What I'm trying to do is be able to find which rivers I can use for defense. The new size of the maps makes it pretty important. BG E.L.Bird 3rd Div,II Corps,A.o.G.,C.S.A. |

Dark blue is not fordable, light blue is. You will find fords as a light blue section in a dark blue creek/river. Sometimes where a river/creek runs though a lot of woods it can be hard to define which is which. I have been caught out a few times by not recognizing a ford or the fact that a river had changed to become fordable. Yours Aye, Lt Col Cam McOmish Lone Star Brigade (1/1/1/AoG/CSA) |

You've got to zoom in to ultra close view to make sure. Some fords don't show up in the two-dimensional views. There are some really evil "fords" in Peninsula that only go <b>half way</b> across their creek!, meaning you can enter, but can't cross . . . evil, evil. Sincerely, Brig Gen Dwight McBride 2nd Brigade/2nd Division I Corps/AOP/USA |

Just click on a hex next to the body of water you want to cross and then right click on the info box and you can see if it a stream, creek, etc. You can cross streams, everything else needs a ford or a bridge. General Mark Nelms 6/3/IX/AoO "Blackhawk Brigade" West Point Instructor |

I find it easier to determine this in 2D than 3D personally...as noted below, the color of the water gives it away. LGen. Hamilton II Corps ANV, CSA |

I like to test the fordability with Reb prisoners first...[}:)] Lt. Gen. Ed Blackburn I/I/VI/AoS ![]() "Forward Bucktails" |

I'm a 2D guy at this point in HPS, and that seems pretty straightforward in determining fordability... ![]() General Jeff Laub Union Chief of the Army ACWGC Cabinet Member http://www.geocities.com/laubster22/UnionHQ/ |

That's ok General Blackburn, well get a bath, and pollute the water at the same time. So your men and horse will get dehydraded and can't fight.[:)] But then again you yanks can't fight no how. With regard to Lt.Col. McOmish and the deep woods obscuring the color. I have found that if you turn OFF the "visible hexes" function temporarily, the contrast is greater and it is easier to see which are Light Blue and which are Dark Blue. With the visible hex feature on, in some places both types seem to disappear. Also as others stated, right-clicking on the terrain box will tell you what is on which hexside. As to 3D, I sometimes find that more confusing as often the creeks and streams will blend against a 3D slope edge.
