Post subject: BGG at the Command Level

Gentlemen,

I've been noodling around with my old BBG game and thought I'd take a crack at playing some of the scenarios at the Command Level. Unfortunately, the manual isn't very forthcoming with specifics on some of the functions, and I was hoping that someone here would be able to enlighten me.

1. What is the difference between Attack and Extreme Attack?
2. What is the difference between Defense and Extreme Defense?
3. If I choose to play at the Major General Level, will the Leutenent Generals or Army Commander override my commands?
4. I gave an Attack command to a Major General, and then noticed, several turns into the game, that some of his subordinates had still not received orders. Do I have to issue commands to all his subordinates, or will the Major General get around to it in his own good time?
5. If I issue orders to Attack to the Major General, will his subordinates eventually move, even without orders?

It's been ten years since I played around with this level of the game and I quickly gave up because I found the interface too frustrating and the experience too confusing. It don't think it's where these games shine ...

In any case, the answer to items 1 and 2 seems obvious ...

"Tell General Ewell to take that hill, if practicable." (attack)

"Tell General Ewell to take that hill." (extreme attack)

"Prepare for the defence." (defense)

"You cannot retreat under any circumstances. If you go, this entire army will be taken from the rear. You have to defend this place to the last." (extreme defense)

I can't comment on the other three I am afraid.

Thanks. The instructions are pretty vague, but I'll keep experimenting with it. The one thing that I like about it, is that once you give the general orders, the game makes all the moves and handles the offensive and defensive fire automatically. The turns really fly by. In the testing I've done so far, I've been able to complete about 8 or 10 turns in an hour. With scenarios like the the full Gettysburg (192 turns), I should be able to get through the whole game in weeks instead of months, without the tedium of moving and positioning 60,000 troops each turn.

Playing at the Command Level also adds an element of uncertainty that I like. As we all know, the AI in the BG and HPS systems is pretty poor, and offers no real competition to a player who wants to micromanage the field. As the Union, I've wiped out the entire Confederate Army twice in "Stewart Arrives!" before turn 160.

By releasing some control, I'm hoping to strike a better balance of play, that will make these battles a little less one-sided. Anyway, thanks for the help.
