Post subject: | I HAVE RETURNED |
Gentlemen, <salute> I am so very pleased to report to you that I have escaped the hospital (barely alive) and have returned to the Confederate Army's Domiciliary. The rascallion surgeons, however, managed to take my right leg as trophy. It has been reported that they intend to sell it to an annonymous Union officer. The proceeds will be used to pay my bar bill at Miss Clarissa's. It would seem my fellow officers have either missed me grately or have turned to drunkiness as an avocation. General Desruisseaux, alone, is responsible for the demise of nearly four cases of the finest French Champagne (whatever that is). With much affection, Colonel Larry Kocher Commanding 1st Division I Corp Army of Georgia |

I am, of course, glad to see you returned to the field with at least some semblance of your former spunkiness, Colonel Kocher. But this business of Yankee officers bartering for your departed leg is wholly distasteful in the extreme. Such unseemly transactions for what may be regarded as "terminated appendages" are not only frowned upon in the active service, but are also rigorously dissuaded in the classrooms of the Union Military Academy! Any Northern officer who should openly barter in such a way to fill the voids in his trophy case would be subject to the most severe repercussions and recriminations, his career all but permanently stained, if not ended! However, no such consequences would be forthcoming should that officer <i>furtively</i> seek to strike a deal. To that end I should ask for the name of the surgeons involved, so that I may quickly announce my bid for their consideration. Maj. Gen. Jos. C. Meyer Second Division, 14th Corps, Army of the Cumberland |
