As a Union officer, I may be out of line, but I know that not everybody thinks Bragg was the worse thing since salmon and peanut butter sandwiches! Check out this website that defends him http://www.aotc.net/Bragg_home.htm Here is a sample quote "Braxton Bragg, a favorite whipping boy of historians, was a much better general than he is made out to be. Of the eight men who reached the rank of full general in the Confederate army Braxton Bragg was certainly the most controversial. " Col Elkin Chief Engineer AotT “I have come to you from the West, where we have always seen the backs of our enemies. . . . Let us study the probable lines of retreat of our opponents, and leave our own to take care of themselves. Let us look before us, and not behind†|

Bragg was good at coming up with a plan but poor on the execution of it. His tendancy to blame subordinates for his failures set the stage for the disasters that followed. He tended to lose his nerve just when his plans were ready to bear friut. Usually pulling defeat from the jaws of victory. General Kennon Whitehead Chatham Grays 2/3/IV AoM (CSA) |

Col Elkin, I am sure General Bragg had his good points. Personally, the ability to get along with the people you are leading is an essential skill for anyone. Actually, I find the same fault with General "Stonewall" Jackson. He was bold and lucky (funny how luck tends to favor the bold, isn't it? [8D]), but I have served under supervisors with his demeanor in the past. I don't care how 'successful' they may or may not have been in the eyes of upper management (or, in the case of these generals, in the eyes of history), I chose to serve under others.
