I was wondering if anyone knows off-hand whether the top most unit is the one that fires defensively? Is there and advantage of having an Artillery unit, a specific one, as the top unit or is it a random affair of firing any unit in the stack? Could be useful to know. |

As far as I know, since we don't have access to the game's internal logic, there is no advantage to stacking order. It looks like the AI chooses targets and firers randomly. There is a optional rule for Turn play that is suppose to make the stacks fire more as a group defensively. |

I think the defensive fire, by which I take it you mean op fire, it is random. Since I very rarely play single phase games, I very rarely see op fire though. What I have noticed in ADF in multiple phase is that the stacks appear to prefer shooting the top unit in the stack directly to their front, all other things being equal. Also, they have appeared to fix the game so that units will fire at infantry in a mixed stack of infantry and artillery. |
