During the early morning Heth's Division (III Corps) advances southeast along Chambersburg Pike engaging Buford's Union Cavalry and shortly before 10:00 a.m. takes Herr Tavern. The Union cavalry then withdraws to the north and south. Shortly after noon Pender's Division (III Corps) on Heth's right engages Union cavalry and infantry at the E Hall place towards the south end of Herr Ridge. During the next two hours Heth's and Pender's Divisions move southeast and occupy Seminary Ridge as Union forces take up positions south of Gettysburg both to the southwest (west of Emmitsburg Road) and to the east (halfway to Benner's Hill). Heth's Division demonstrates moving towards Gettysburg from Luthern Seminary while Rode's and Early's Divisions (II Corp) advance south down Bendersville and Hunterstown Road - completely uncheck by Union forces. By 500 p.m. Early's Division occupies Culp's Hill and engages two to three Union Brigades at Rock Creek northwest of the Z. Taney farm. With Early's flanking movement, Heth's Division pushing southeast, Pender's Division advancing on the right near the H. Spangler farm and Anderson's Division (III Corps) destroying the Union Cavalry near the Schoolhouse on Hagerstown Road the Union surrenders the field and withdraws in haste towards Tanneytown. |
