Occasionally I find a fun little Patton nugget - "You can't run an army without profanity, and it has to be eloquent profanity. An army without profanity couldn't fight its way out of a piss-soaked paper bag." If only George S. Patton had lived sooner. What kind of relationship would he have had with Stonewall? Stonewall has his own profanity expert in Major Harman (his quartermaster I believe) and turned a deaf ear to his tirades so long as his men were supplied. |

Excerpt from Wikipedia: General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, affectionately called (Jubal) Early his "Bad Old Man", because of his short temper, insubordination and use of profanity. I guess Stonewall turned a deaf ear to Early as well. |

Didn't Jackson's Chief of Artillery have quite the vulgar mouth as well? I can't think of his name off the top of my head. I remember a story where a team of mules was holding up an advance and the teamster couldn't get them moving. This man got off his horse, waded into the stream and started cussing the team, who to everyone's surprise, started to move. He waded back out of the stream, remounted his horse and looked at Jackson. "Sorry, sir." He knew Jackson to be a godly man. "It's the only language that mules understand." I'll do my best to find this man's name. |
