This could be from any war: [During a storm at sea...] The captain of the transport studied his clinometer and, with a dispassion that terrified every landlubber in earshot, mused, "I can't believe a ship can roll so far without turning over." Somewhere in the Club is a sailor laughing to himself. |

Wow, heard similar thoughts from sailors I know. I can't fathom myself but it's incredible. Did the quote come from someone in particular? |

Ran across it in Rick Atkinson's "An Army at Dawn". Attributed to a sailor as the second wave of transports and ships tried to navigate the storms off the Moroccan coast in 1942. |

Conversely I have heard a Navy sailor ask what the handholds on the bridge of a ship were for. Apparently he had never seen them on Navy ships. I would have thought even a modern aircraft carrier or submarine has them but I have not had the chance to confirm. So maybe he was just a Navy guy being Navy. |
