Went out with my better half yesterday to get our dog some exercise. Her favorite place to walk (she goes here at least 3 times a week) is out on the far end of the Confederate line at Fredericksburg. This is Jackson's position during the battle and overlooks the Slaughter Pen. I took a few pics I thought I'd share... This is an overview of The Meade Pyramid. The pyramid marks the point of the Union breakthrough (on the Yankee left) during the battle ![]() A closer view of the pyramid - It's not accessible, and the RR PoPo don't like you going there... ![]() So I don't have to recount the history of the pyramid... ![]() And, lastly, an arty position on the far end of Jackson's line. The pyramid and Slaughter Pen are off to the left, generally over the cannon. ![]() Today, I took a trip back to my hometown in Southwest Virginia. I make this trip about once a month and it takes me through the battlefields of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Mine Run, Trevillian Station and Spotsy Courthouse, plus the areas of numerous other skirmishes. And, to put into game terms, how far I live from the Fredericksburg Battlefield, "X" marks the spot, or as close as I can figure.. ![]() |

When the sign says the Meade Pyramid is not accessible - is it on private property or is it "not accessible" for some other reason? |

It could possibly be part of the park service. The American Battlefield Trust owns the Slaughter Pen Farm behind the trees in the distance and at least a portion of that land runs to the RR right-of-way. All I know for sure is that the sign says it's not accessible and my days of running from the police are long past. |

EDIT: I just checked the ABT map of Slaughter Pen... the Pyramid is on the property of Fredericksburg- Spotsylvania National Military Park. Railroad police or park service police... I no longer have an interest in running from either ![]() |

Mike, I thoroughly enjoyed the pictures - thank you very much for sharing them. As so often on battlefields, there is a profound sense of peace & I am reminded of Max Hastings' foreword to his book on the 1944 Normandy campaign, when he dedicated the book to Harry (presumably a son or grandson) 'in the hope that beaches will mean no more to him than buckets and spades'. |
