All I believe most play with rout limit on and while it does limit mass routings I feel that it has a negative effect on the game in terms of casualties (too high) and tactics ((far less reserves and single line formations). I have never played with rout limit off but am looking to do so to test this theory |

I was just reading this morning about Bragg's defense of Missionary Ridge near Chattanooga where Thomas' Divisions launched a "Pickett's charge" type assault on the steep, fortified ridgeline. A significant section of the demoralized Confederate line gave way with very few Union casualties as one brigade after the other routed away in echelon and the mass of rebel troops melted away back towards Atlanta. I'm wondering if many of the optional rules would be best implemented as toggles set within the scenario file itself, rather than as a cafeteria-style selection by the players. |

I'd love to play with Rout Limiting deselected but I don't know of anyone who does so. I agree it would be more realistic for it to be selected but the casualties would still be high, probably higher because they do not exit the battlefield. The reason is that the routed units would be easier to scoop up and be eliminated from the game and when that happens they would be included as casualties for the Victory Points. |
