I'm interested to hear comments from others about the Movement Point (MP) cost when units are in forest hexes.

In the WDS games the common MP cost for infantry moving through a forest hex is 4 MPs. Some scenarios increase that to 5 MPs when the unit is deployed into line. My thought is that maintaining a unit 'in line' and through a forest would be a slow process. The 4 MP cost for moving 'in column' though a forest seems okay to me, but I feel that the cost of moving 'in line' and not becoming disrupted should be 6 MPs.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this matter?

I have no real strong opinion on the matter. The game suffers from not having two different types of wooded hexes - Heavy Woods and Light Woods. At Stones River (for example) I can move through the woods in wintertime very easily and I can see a long distance through the trees. But in the summer I can't hike as easily and the visibility is much much less. Having two built in wooded terrain hexes would be a nice thing.

That being said, each game is different. Some games charge you 4 points to move through wooded hexes in line and other games it is 5. I think 5 is more common than 4 but I'd have to go do some research on the issue.

From a gaming standpoint, I really don't care what they set it at. I just wish that it was standardized so that I didn't have to check the PDT every time that I opened a game turn in order to remind myself of what this scenario is charging for moving thru the woods.

A distinction between heavy and light woods would make a lot of sense. That would also make the Optional Rule Limited Artillery Unlimber more realistic (no unlimber in heavy woods, fine in light woods).

More standardisation on forest movement would be a good thing. It does not seem to rely upon any distinction between the type of forest and is rather a whim of the designer. Whenever I play a scenario where it costs 5 MPs to move through a forest, I usually get caught short in a couple of moves.

Don't see a whole lot of difference between orchards and light woods. In fact, if the orchards I have seen are any indication, the column movement cost for infantry ought to be the same as clear terrain. Light woods probably a point extra for debris. From what I have read about the Wilderness, it was in a class by itself and might justify more movement points and maybe even automatic disruption for infantry moving in line.

For Me the Biggest frustration is the Variances in game titles
1..Weapons that have different ranges in different titles and even battles within the same title VERY ODD

2..differences in terrain effects some woods are -40% others only -10% ect

While i can see possibly tying Map features to season Weather ect i have discovered this to not be the case
In Forgotten some battles allow 48 MP for Cavalry and 24 for Infantry ?
but then cost to change formation goes up and other actions Whats the reason
