| Post subject: | Winfield Scott vs. George Patton |
Just reading the book "Dissonance" by David Detzer and thought his two cent opinion about Winfield Scott interesting: Winfield Scott was arguably a far better soldier, and man, than Patton. It's a hard comparison to make as their situations were very different. It's been years since I read my last biography on Patton or Scott. I have no problem with the statement that Scott was the better person overall. Patton was no saint. But was Scott a "far better soldier" as Detzer stated? That's not as easy to defend. Both were successful generals with fanatically loyal supporters behind them (and critics as well). I don't know. There's a heck of a debate in that statement for someone who sat down and really thought it out and argued the merits of the generals point by point. |

I'll take Patton. Scott defeated a third-rate army while Patton fought against the German war machine. |
