Post subject:  Unusual Day At Work
Yesterday while on a sales appointment, while talking to the homeowner, I was informed that he had a very old cemetary on his property. I ask to see it....Lo and behold, I found myself visiting the grave of Private John Shadrack Barrow of Company F, 11th Btn of Spaight's Regiment in Hebert's brigade of the Confederate Army. Does make one feel a bit awed....doesn't it? Regards, Hank Smith

It does, for sure.

I don't know if this is right, but:
"John Shadrack Barrow was born on May 14, 1836 in Louisiana. He died between June 14, 1890 and 1899 in Chambers county, Texas. Parents: Benjamin Franklin Barrow Sr. and Permelia Jane White.

Spouse: Eliza Jane Whittington. John Shadrack Barrow and Eliza Jane Whittington were married on February 10, 1858 in Chambers, Texas. Children were: Olevia Barrow, Francis Barrow, John Barrow, Maggie Barrow, Letitia Barrow."

As Spaight's Regiment was a Texas unit, this could be right.

A quick run on GOOGLE brought up some info, then able to dig a little deeper and found that info. Sometimes when you search, you have to try different things to narrow the search down.

One thing I did was to search on Spaight's Regiment and found it was from Texas, so that helped narrow the search, also.

This probably took all of 3-5 minutes to do.

He died in 1896 if his tombstone is to be believed....and yes that is him.....the property he is buried on is in Chambers County....Hank

It is somewhat amazing that I can find information on a private in a Texas regiment, but can not find the information I am looking for on my GrGrGrandfather.My GrGrandmother told me about him (she was born in 1869), but didn't tell me if it was HER father or her husbands father. But I am still looking!!!

I will give a small tribute to the Gentleman who owns the property also. He bought it to build his dream home on, discovered the abandoned graveyard, and spent over a grand on the fence he put around it. He did not have to do it, yet he honors the people who rest there. He has also researched the stories of those he could identify......so their resting place went from abandoned, to cared for once again......
