Post subject: | Stupid DOS Question |
I have put batch commands in my AUTOEXEC file to clean out the PBEM.xxx and PBEM.YY files. problem is that I cannot remember basic DOS crap... example: all my civil war games are in seperate subdirectories of a main CIVIL WAR directory. The directory is actually C:\CIVIL WAR\ problem is when I type "cd CIVIL WAR" I get an error that says to many parameters. Basically it does not like the space between CIVIL and WAR in the directory name. Can anyone tell me how to get around this... I am using winblows 98se Colonel John Corbin Commanding officer 2nd Division XVIII Corps AoJ |

Try typing in cd CIVILW~1 That should take you to the folder using the old dos 8.3 naming conventions. Col. Robert Hinkle "Hinks Brigade" 1/I/AoA |

Hard for me to remember as well, but shouldn't it be: CD\Civil War Doesn't it need the slash[?] Maj Gen Sean Turner 3rd Cavalry Division, "Yankee Thrasher" I Corps Army of Alabama |

My DOS is very rusty also, but isn't there an 8 position limitation on directory/file names? Maybe I am thinking of something else, but you might try renaming to CIVILWAR. BG Robert Frost Army of Cumberland |

John, Of course you know to bring up the black DOS screen as a window, and type in "cd.." as needed but without the quotation marks to get to the C directory, and then "dir" to get a listing of what's in the C drive. This listing will show you what the computer is really calling that "Civil War" sub-directory. It will be something like that "civilw~1" name, cut to eight characters. I still do a little DOS typing because, if you can believe it, I still zip my game files using an early-90s freeware program called "pkware" or "pkzip" or something. Took me a while to figure out why I used to have problems downloading home-made scenarios, until I realized that files whose names shared the first five or six letters (there are many) were being overwritten as they unzipped by this relatively primitive software. That is, fredericksburg1.*** and fredericksburg2.*** both abbreviate to freder~1.***, with one overwriting the other. Anyway, back to the point: type and enter "dir" to see what your computer really calls that subdirectory. Salute! GEN Gene Nix, AotM Boggy Creek Swamp Rats |

Hi, If you want to create a space between Civil and War, you can tape an ASCII character: Hold "ALT" and tape 255. Sorry for my English Good luck <b>ACW Brigadier Général G. Here's my batch file: cd c:\ del /s pbemail.yyy del /s pbemail.xxx del /s campaign.yyy del /s campaign.xxx The /s gets all subdirectories so it essentially finds all such files on my c: drive and deletes tham all. That way, it doesn't matter how many game directories you have or their names. Major General Dirk Gross CAV DIV/XIV Corps/AoC |
