It seems as though all these and any ACWGC get togathers are always back east, what is the chance of something being held towards the center? I live here in TN. and there are plenty of Civil War sites and most are not that far from each other. I am sure there are alot that would be able to get togather if it were held other than back east. Just a thought.

Gen. Malone,

Word is Kansas City may well be the location for the next Tiller Con in two years. That should be center for just about all except those back on the continent.[8]
Course that don't mean you couldn't have a get together in TN before that.[;)]

Central US location, to try and draw more people to the event. Considering the world-wide audiance we have there's no "perfect" place to have it though.

Additionally a number of people with experiance setting up these types of events will be handling the local leg work.

It would be great if Nashville could be used. It's kinda central and near lot's of my designing staumpping grounds. Fort Donelson, Franklin, Shy's Hill, Shiloh, Chickamauga, Stones River, etc...

But I know you need someone local to set it up, so that might be a major problem. Oh well!

But Tony and I would be sure to attend![:D]

Rich H. I understand about the far reaching of this club and others, but it seems that since that is the case, it might be good to move the events around. I also understand about the local help, but since we as a club do reach so far, it might be plausable to have help in many areas if asked and specified, just my thoughts on it. I would love to attend these things, and meet those that I battle against and with, but working, going to school etc... makes it impossible when the events are so far away.

Uh Tony?

This year the event was in Richmond, Va., the next one is being planned for Kansas City, Mo. Isn't that 'moving the events around'?

Methinks you've been working and studying too, hard. [:)]

Hi Tony,

Moving around would create a logistical nightmare, from an organizers point of view. Really, it would have been ideal to continue where we held it this year, as all the ground work was laid and things would just need to be fine tuned. But more people were dissatisfied with the location than were happy, so I'm willing to move it. We will need to pick a location and get established for these reasons and others. Other things are bargaining power with local vendors, the facility, etc. Also, planning. If people know where things are going to be it makes it easier to plan. And finally, we would never be able to make everyone happy, even if we held it every year, and moved it to a new location each year. So at some point a line has to be drawn, and the earlier that's done the better.

I think once this get's established it will be a good thing, and given the length of time in between the events it should allow people to plan for the travel and time off, etc. I hope you are able to work it in at some point, as I'm confident you would enjoy it.

Regards,
Rich

It should be noted that the people that came to Tiller Con this year spent their time AT Tiller Con during Friday and Saturday. Most of the battleground and other sightseeing was done before and after the event. The doors really never closed but it seemed most people were there from 10:00 in the morning to near midnight.

From seeing this event I would also say that two days was plenty. Sunday was mostly breakdown time for the HPS crew, reboxing the rental computers and all. It was a LOT of work by just a few people and I am sad to say I was not one of them. Thanks guys for the backbreaking work you put into the setup and breakdown.

There was plenty of networking gear available and there were probably 6 to 8 computers that were never touched. I don't know of anyone that used their own laptop to play games, though their were several there.

Ned Simms has a thread here at the MD talking about a "Down South Conference" next year in 2006 but it would not be an HPS sponsored event like Tiller Con. It would be more of a club sponsored event and informal get together like previous reunions as I understand it. Of course I would like to see that event held in Texas. [:D] Maybe the Galveston-Houston area. The San Jacintop Battle ground is close by and San Antonio and the Alamo about 3 and a half hours away. (For the coming HPS Texas Independence and US Mexican War series.) Oops, wasn't supposed to let that out of the bag.[8D]

Don, you are correct as the Down South version is not even club sponsored at this point. I started to put together something similar this year but after corresponding with Rich and finding out that there could be a TillerCon event, then I decided not to interfere with it. The success of these TillerCons can directly affect our wargaming so why hurt them. There is nothing planned that I am aware of in 2006. I enjoyed the first ACWGC get together in Petersburg, VA and I saw a definite benefit to meeting some of your fellow gamers.

The club would be much better off with a HPS/Tiller/Rich sponsored event than anything that I could put together. I will probably not have the where with all to have computers at the event and networked like Rich arranges. I will probably not have the connections to have nice door prizes nor HPS items for sale like Rich arranges. I probably won't have Rich's patience and PR ability to put your own bucks and reputation on the line while you sweat it out to see if enough people pay up and show up to make it all worthwhile. I also cannot promise that John Tiller nor any of the game designers will be present.

What I can do is reserve a conference room probably at a hotel with some rooms blocked for overnight reservations and arrange for a day or two of fun and comeraderie. It's something that can be done in any country or part of a country. Why not hold one in Texas, and California, and England, and Germany, and Virginia, and Ohio, as well as Down South? It just takes someone willing to handle the arrangements and put some of their own funds and reputation at risk. You just decide that you're willing to do it and then post and find out if there are enough people interested in it at your location to warrant the time and money investment that you would have to put into it. I may do it once and never do it again, but then again I may enjoy it so much that I'd do it every year - TillerCon or no TillerCon. I just have to figure out how to tell the wife that I've offered to do this!!!

Hehehe, yes Ned, you hit a lot of points dead on. [:)]

Putting together a small function like that is no where near as large of an undertaking as the Con, so it should be much simpler. But, based on the two previous ones I did prior to TC attendance was only about 20 people, and some of those traveled a long way.

It might be worth it to have these run on alternate years from TC, that way there is no conflict of interest. And then have one down South, one in the North, one in the East and one in the West...and maybe even one in Europe, if people are willing to do the leg work.

As for me, HPS support, and I can probably safely say John Tiller, our attendance and support will continue to go behind the Con's only, as that's a big enough venture as it is. [:)]

Ned,

Here's a suggestion.

"Honey, some of the guys I wargame with over the computer are stopping by to visit for a weekend later this summer. Should I fold out the sleeper sofa, and set up the card tables in the kitchen so we can all play? or, do you think I should book some rooms at the Holiday Inn?" [:p]

Having met Mrs. Simms I don't think that would go over to well...if I remember correctly Ed, she was less-than-pleased with the hobby several years ago - and I doubt that has improved with time! [:D]

Rich, lets just say that her enthusiasm for the amount of time that I spend on the computer hasn't dampened over the years. About the only way that I survive is that she knows that the computer would be replaced once again with the golf course and guess which one is cheaper and has more 'home' time. Well, that and I spend a small fortune on wife insurance (flowers) every month does the trick.

Al, Mark figured that out and told you to say that, didn't he?
