Gents,

Caleb Vicks and I have been playing pbem and recently tried to play a scenario online. We used IM to set it up, started the game and I sent him my IP address and he got an error, Error establishing system as caller. He then started the game and I tried to join him as the caller with the same result.

We both have a router with a local network and are able to play games on our own network. Both of us made our Getty game an exception from the firewall for XP.

Any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it ?

Hi Ken,

It's a matter of having the correct ports open on your firewall's so that Direct Play can pass through. The ports are:

6073
2300 - 2400
47624

Open then for both IP & UDP just for good measure. You can then close them up again after you are done gaming. My Linksys router allows me to do this with simply clicking a check box next to each set and then enabling it or disabling it.

Thanks, I think I got it. Have a Linksys router also and thanks to your post and the support site I think I've got it set up. Just have to wait til I get another chance to try it.

Rich and Ken,
I've got a gigafast EE400-R router. I've opened up the control for it and can't find any thing that looks like Rich said. I find nothing to open or close ports. Do you suppose that this router does not have a firewall? Ken I'd Like to give it a try sometime maybe we can get it to work. Cheers,Caleb

I don't play them that way much as I find it hard to allocate the time all at once. PBEM is by far the best for my gaming time.

Caleb, I'm not familure with that router, but many routers you have to use a command line to open and close ports. Either check the documentation or go to the manufactures web site...they should have something for you!

Rich,

Have the router set up for static IP addresses on my LAN and set it up for port forwarding from the instructions using the ports you listed. Need to verify one more question, I presume I need to send the router's IP address if I'm hosting the game and not the IP address on my LAN ? Thanks again for the help.

You can try the Gigafast site or this one http://www.portforward.com/gigafast/EE400-R.htm which has some how to tutorials for setting up a static ip on your network and how to set up Port Forwarding on your router.

Ken,

That is correct, the Public IP address is the one for your router. The address you are using on your internal network is non-routable...meaning the first device that seems it out on the net will discard it right away.
