Actually the War allowed funding and legislation for the Trans-Continental Railroad to be passed. Of course they used it at 1st Bull Run and extensively in the West for supplies and such. They are as important as the rivers are to the war. Many major battles happen because of the existence of railroads in the objective plan.

Bull Run was about a railroad hub. Atlanta was railroad too. The only real quick connection between the East and West over the Appalachians.

So you get the idea. Railroads are lifeblood of supplies and goods.

I am sure you have heard of Herman Haupt. Absolute genius and master of the rails. An unsung hero of the war. Also, the US Railroad came into being in that it created regulated standards for track size and all sorts of stuff needed to bring the many companies whom were in business together for the war effort and they helped control those compaines.

Lol..Bill I was sitting there scratching my head as I wrote it saying..."I am almost certain I figured he knew this??" [:D][:D]

Hehe...sorry misunderstood the question. I will dig around to see what I can find. Of the top of my head the Baltimore and Ohio, Pennslyvania Railroad and the New York Central I think were all around at the time. The problem is there are probably so many localized systems it is nuts. I will see what I can dig up at work.

I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

The Disney movie about Andrews' Raiders and the chase after The General was entitled "The Great Locomotive Chase." It was made in the mid-1950s and starred Fess Parker as Andrews, and Jeffrey Hunter as the Confederate who led the chase. This was the second movie based on the hijacking of The General. The first was produced by and starred Buster Keaton. It was filmed in the 1920s, was called "The General," and had lots of good battle footage to boot. Both movies are available for purchase on DVD. The Keaton movie was on Turner Classic not long ago.

Glyn - how did you know I liked Thomas the Tank? Ok - so my age gave it away? Actually I knew nothing about Thomas until about 10 years ago when a young friend of mine was interested in them. I could get him anything Thomas and he was a happy camper.
