This is a review and summary of Timothy B. Smith’s Champion Hill: Decisive Battle for Vicksburg. Dr. Smith sets out to write the first detailed history of the most important battle of the Vicksburg Campaign (some would say the entire war), and he has done an admirable job. Hi, Brett,

Just want to thank you for the comprehensive Civil War book reports you post from time to time. It sure looks like a lot of effort went into this report, and if I never read the book, I feel like I gained a better understanding of the Battle of Champion's Hill just from the report. Thanks!

Brett,

About 2/3 of the way thru the book. Had very little knowledge of Champion Hill prior to reading it, just some references to it in books on the Vicksburg Campaign. I pretty much agree with your take on the book, find it both informative and enjoyable.

Thanks for the comments guys. I appreciate it. I love to discuss books, and especially those books focusing on the Civil War. Comments, whether agreeing or disagreeing with my take, are always very welcome.
