Excellent Gift and it's nice to read of such consideration - it's so rare these cynical Days! [:(]

Regarding preservation . . . I know nothing - but I would advise 2 things.

1. If mounting the haversack for display . . . place it somewhere out of direct Sunlight . . not even an hour a day. Otherwise it will bleach and any natural Oils will be dried out of the material . . . causing cracking. Eventually . . . Your fine specimen would turn to dust.

2. In any preservation . . be wary and do not give in to the temptation of re-stitching or patching up of tears etc. They are part of the history of the item and any "Wear 'n Tear" Repairs will detract from the Financial value of the Item. I know that this is a minor concern . . . the Real value of the Item is in the Thought behind it's Gift to You - however, Ye should bear it in the back of Your mind.

Another thought - pardon the Morbidity of it and may it be a long way away . . . but, I'd also give some thought to where it'll end up when you no Longer have any use for anything on this Earth. Family Heirloom? Who would best take care of it and treasure it - as You no doubt will. [?]

Hi, Don,

Don't know how to take care of something like that, but I'll bet a
museum would know and be glad to advise you. Try the Nimitz Museum
in Fredricksburg, Texas if nothing is closer. They have a lot of
artifacts, although not that old.

Mike is absolutely right, a museum conservationist is who you want to talk to. They can point you in the right direction for the information to care for this properly to ensure it's continued preservation.

... and congrats on a very thoughtful and well deseerved thank you - maybe the Club should get you a musket to go with it? [:)]

Beside talking to museum, you could talk to someone at one of the battlefields. You could call them, as there are not many in your neck of the SE. I am sure that they have someone there or can refer you.

I would look into a glass case that your might be able to purchase or have made (or make yourself, if you are handy)and be able to seal it and still be able to look at all sides.
