In a gracious gesture of Southern hospitality, Confederate CoA General DW Mallory offered to cross swords with me to kick of General Nelms' Braggin' Rights tourney. The battle location was Iuka, historical scenario. It was new to both of us, and short with only 12 turns. I had offered 3 points to General Mallory for 5 points towards the Union for the tourney. The battle unflded quickly, as I pushed forward from the outset, knowing that with the objective hexes being in such close proximity to each other, my best defense was to go on the offense and create some space to allow for the eventual Union routs![B)] The Union cavalry briefly held the town, but a brigade of Rebs swept through, forcing a Union retreat after grabbing one Supply Wagon, but at the expense of nearly 100 cavalry troopers.[xx(] The difference in the game was two fold - my ability to capture 6 tubes of artillery, and the fact that the routs didn't hit until turn 10, by which time I had made good progress forward. Thanks to DW for a great game! We'll be matching up again as soon as I get back from Cointh... Huzzah Union! Gentlemen, Alas, it is true -- General Laub pinned my ears back in a Rebel Minor Defeat, as I was on defense from the beginning, but made the mistake of not realizing it until the 2nd or 3rd turn! I was guilty of not doing sufficient recon [V] . When General Laub & I first discussed this scenario, I thought it was the opening scenario in the Corinth campaign, in which the Rebels outnumber the Union no matter what option the Union player takes. I did take a quick look at it while we were negotiating and saw the Yanks were moving up from the south and WE held the town, instead of the other way around, but Price's entire force was on the map and I would still have the advantage in numbers. Much of the Rebel army starts off fixed in place, but is scheduled to be released in the first half of the 12-turn scenario. It wasn't until too late I realized it wasn't the ENTIRE Rebel army that was scheduled to be released, but only the Missouri Brigade [:(] ! This was a quick, fun match. I would recommend it for those looking for a short, relatively balanced scenario. Yes, the Union forces outnumber the (unfixed) Rebels, the Union has better artillery, and the Union actually has cavalry at its disposal -- but, in my mind, that just about makes it "even" [:)] ! Bartender, please put General Laub's next round on my tab for a well-fought fight. Your humble servant, Gen 'Dee Dubya' Mallory David W.
