Very intriguing Al! I designed half a dozen Zulu scenarios a couple of years ago for a PC game called Medieval 2 (oddly enough!) including a few rare Zulu versus Zulu encounters. I have almost as much of a burning interest in the Zulu Wars as I do the ARW, so I was glad to get your email. In fact, as soon as is possible for me, I'll take on any haughty soldier of Queen Vicky with my Zulu version of the 1st Foot Guard, the venerable uThulwana regiment...the King's Own! ![]() USUTHU! I'm not sure what is a worse image...Mr Natta in Zulu war-paint with a big pointy stick (Shudder), or in a perfumed wig and fake moles... Phil, Here is your Zulu name uHeshe it is a name given to a bird that is "fast when catching chickens". Of course there are those who may call you iNhlekabafazi which means 'the cackle of old women' BTW my sources indicate the war cry of the uThulwana being, "Mina! Mina! Mina! Hhahhe!" Major Al Amos 1st U.S. Dragoons 1812-R Edited by - Al Amos on 02/20/2002 23:19:02 |

The game files go into HPS' War of 1812. It is not a beta test game, just sometihng I'm playing around with. After it is all done I'll see if John wants to pick it up as a game or just post it at Rich Hamilton's SDC site as an player developed add-on. Major Al Amos 1st U.S. Dragoons 1812-R |

"Not bad. Not bad at all," thinks Lt. Amos to himself, "over 40 Zulu dropped since they came into view 10 minutes (5 turns) ago, and at 500 yards (60 hexes) the men are doing quite well with the rifle today. I wonder what Induna Water is up to? One of his Ibutho (regiment) has disappeared. Bugger, that could be bad news. I wonder how many of his 4,000 natives are in that one? Well, nevermind we must hold this station and, I intend to get the most out of all 137 men here!" With that settled he continues to watch the advancing mass in silence. "10 minutes has passed and the Zulu keep closing." "I shuffle my firing platoons to the south end of the hospital preparing for the apparant first assault. The Ibutho that was charging across the open has broken and gone to ground (withdrew.) Over 100 bodies mark their advance." "The first crisis of the battle is about to happen as nearly 2,000 Zulu mass within 50 yds (6 hexes) of the compound." Hopefully, we will be here for the next 10 minute update ![]() Major Al Amos 1st U.S. Dragoons 1812-R Edited by - Al Amos on 02/27/2002 19:23:34 |

The Induna stands amid the still smoking remains of the burnt mission station. "I have obeyed the King's order and slaughtered the British invaders to the last man," he thinks ... "but I have paid dearly for it. Over 600 young warriors won't return home. Those British with their rapid-firing rifles ... so few of them, and they have fought so well." In turning away from the field of carnage, he salutes his dead opponents, and then begins to rally his surviving men in order to rejoin the main army that is reported to have won an even greater victory at Isandlwana. Maj. Lt. Amos' ghost appears before Induna Walter and reminds him, "the King, your brother told you NOT to cross the Buffalo River! You've been a bad boy." The apparition disappears laughing, "hehehehe..." Major Al Amos 1st U.S. Dragoons 1812-R |

Hm, did I misunderstand the order? ... I swear it sounded like "cross that damned river and bring me Lt. Amos' head." Maj. Walter 4th Regiment "King's Own" AdC, Royal North American Corps |

At the moment there's nothing to stop the Brits from shooting a hundred or so Zulus and then retreating off one of the map edges with a major victory. Of course, this wouldn't have been very pratical on the day - so perhaps you need to add at least one objective hex to encourage them to stay put? You may wish to reduce the quality of the rifle armed Zulus to reflect their lack of training - they seem to be inflicting more casualties than they ought. Also in the variant scenario, perhaps the cavalry that rode off without fighting shouldn't be as high as "C" grade? Ens.Rich White 28th North Glos Rgt Right Wing British Army |
