Post subject: | Car Stories |
A hearty cheer for our hero - Sean Coffey - who has successfully gotten his vehicle back on the road despite wanting to chuck it into a local streambed in Ohio! I remember those Ohio roads - hard on horses and cars! Sean - hang in there pard - I know how you feel - I have almost dumped my Oldsmobile (it stalled today as a matter of fact while I was trying to turn left at an intersection) in one of our canyons - then I remembered that I love our beautiful valley and decided not to tarnish it with such a vehicle! Finally, who has a funny car story? I know this has nothing to do with the Revolution (and Charles Lee was not related to Robert E. Lee!) but here is my offering: In about 1989 I owned a Honda Civic wagon with hatchback. On that model the spare tire was under the vehicle by the gas tank. While heading back to work one day the bolt came off that held the bracket in place and the tire landed in the middle of the street (but was not harmed) and I had to stop the car and retrieve it. I re-secured the bolt and headed on my way. A few nights later while travelling on a local highway with a friend the tire came loose again on a steep uphill grade (but well near the crest). I heard the scraping of the bracket and knew immediately what was up. Pulling the car over to the left into the emergency lane I got out of the car with only one idea in mind - secure the bracket and get back on the road. My friend got out of the car as well. He had in the past jokingly said (while as pedestrians we were at a crosswalk waiting to enter the street) that he had saved my life. We often joked in this vein. In this case he may have saved my back and more from problems as he pointed back down the road from whence we had come and said, "Well would you look at that!" Sure enough the tire was rolling alongside a car (by its left wheel) coming up the grade one lane over from ours about 1000 feet down the road from us. I looked on with a look of amazement. It almost seemed that the tire had a big grin on it as it mockingly seemed to say that it was not to be denied. After a quick second the car pulled by the tire and the wandering rubber took a turn to the right and what I thought would be a swift exit off the highway. I returned to securing the bracket (kneeling down by the rear of the car). After a few seconds had passed my friend said, "Dont look now but here comes your tire!" In geniune astonishment I turned and saw that my tire (which must have been tipped by a car) was now heading directly towards me! Talk about Twilight Zone eh? My friend said, "You had better get out of the way!" I stood up, moved back about five feet from the car and with my friend as my witness the tire rolled up, struck the rear bumper, fell back, did the usual wabble-wabble-wabble that tires do and laid at my feet at rest! I looked over at my friend and said, "You saved my life!" Well if not my life at least my back! Ok - who is next? Maj. Bill Peters, Morgan's Rifles, American Army Commander of French Dept. |
