You know, the longer I play in the clubs, the harder I find it to win decisively ... or to get whipped thoroughly. There more I play, the more often the results are in, or very near to, the draw area.
I wonder if there is a rule here ... seems games between newbies tend to go to extremes ... they are fragile. Both sides take a lot of risks, are not afraid of making mistakes, and at one point one risk, one mistake too much tips the balance and one army collapses.
Veteran players are more conservative ... rather forego a chance than risk sacrificing your army. Accordingly, it's much harder to gain a decisive advantage. The game moves slowly, but inexorably in one direction, but may never reach the next victory level threshold. I have seen it very often lately.
I have also watched some tourneys in different clubs where players were paired according to seniority. Often that resulted in a lot of close-run affairs betweeen the veteran players and some spectacular victories among the more junior ones. Accordingly, the final field showed newbies in the first and last ranks, and the senior players in the middle positions.
Any thoughts?

Interesting thought Dierk. You may well be on to something (though, I just took a long chance against Stefan, and it's turning out disasterously). Though, is it that as people gain experience, they take less chances, or is it that they avoid leaving the big openings?

Ain't it both? And that both players do it?

Probably so. But, what I was thinking was the "little" but decisive mistakes. Leaving a unit turned the wrong way to keep a hex free of ZOC, or not managing their command.

To elaborate on that thought: I recall some early games where I won because I took some terrible risk - advancing an isolated wing into my opponent's rear or something like that. Today I wouldn't do that because I know my opponents are competent enough to make me pay for that sure as hell. When I was a newbie, I did not consider my opponents incompetent, of course ... but I didn't realize there was a risk at all. And it turned out often neither did they.
Also, I recall one of my first games in the ACW club where, in a desperate situation, when my army was on the verge of collapse, I simply attacked. It turned out my opponent's army was in the same state and collapsed just one turn before mine would have. I just can't imagine two experienced players abuse their armies like that. I know I don't do it any more.

For me it comes from so many whuppns'... after you loose so many times you tend to become more cautious, which pays off in the long run.

That, and you become more aware of your armies limitations...and don't have to learn it when they all start running away.

Dierk, I have not much draws in my records. I have played hundreds of battles now. Most I won but a lot of disasters too. I prefer a more aggresive style of fighting. Taking more risk than necessary.
Gary have an equal style. This making our battles "interesting".

It could also be that you gravitate more towards balanced scenarios

I'll post the relative ranks of the tournament players, when finished and see if games between relative peers have different outcomes than those with disparate players.

Hopefully, with our campaign feature we are all learning to fight as if there was a tomorrow, and not trying to always produce a Waterloo or Austerlitz.

According to my theory, it would rather have to be expected that a game between high-ranking peers is more likely to be near the draw area than one between low-ranking peers.
But you know about theories.

How does that relate to the Major Victory you (currently) have against me at Burlington Heights?

Actually, with experince, one does tend to learn when to cut your losses. I, however, am extremely dense and fairly stubborn.

Ah, but Burlington is such a lopsided affair! Besides, I am speaking about the grand picture ... I still get beaten royally, and win gloriously, sometimes.
