All,

Does anyone have an opinion on the weather variants I created in 1812? Are these worth while? Anyone playing them? Please let me know.

Rich

Slog, slog, damn the mud ... it really hampers movement, and to get a rallied unit back in the fight needs two turns instead of one. Battles slow down a lot.

You know that a draw in a campaign game puts you on the bad weather track for the next battle? I figure most of us have played under mud conditions a lot. [|)]

I have played a couple, but not often.

I've played one PBEM. I like having the option, especially for possibly editing a new SCN. Thanks.

Its a must for the game. Many of the battles were in the north where conditions were rather wet. Hey, in the south they were wet too!

Bring on the mud!

Weather variants are certainly a good idea, but perhaps they can be developed further? Eg. the effect of heavy rain on flintlocks was certainly less than on the earlier matchlocks but still more significant than on later percussion weaponry. How about the effect of early morning mist that swirls in thick pockets, especially in low-lying ground near rivers & marshes? Or the Sun? Fighting with the Sun in the eyes couldn't have been much fun! Perhaps such elements could be calculated in the same sort of way as LOS? Weather conditions certainly can have a significant effect on combat effectiveness - eg. the British picquets at Inkermann found that many of their rifles misfired due to sodden charges.

Of course, it may be difficult to incorporate subtle weather effects into the game engine - eg. a heavy downpour of rain that falls on just part of the battlefield and shifts according to wind speed & direction - but any aspect of battlefield weather conditions that can be incorporated would certainly be welcome.
