Seriously though, is it better to fire as one or individually when in the same hex[?]

Is there any advantage to combining fire[?]

How about cannons[?]

Paul,

Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages, as far as I know. If anyone disagrees or thinks I just made a mistake, feel free to jump in. I think neither is always advantageous. There are times for one and times for the other. The advantages of firing individually are that you can spread the fatigue hits and casualties around. Instead of one badly battered enemy unit, you can have a few which are battered enough so that all have to make morale checks. The disadvantage is that each time you fire, the enemy gets a chance to return fire. As for firing a whole hex, the advantage is that the enemy only gets one set of return fires, thus doing less damage in return. The disadvantage is that you don't get to spread the punishment. Here are examples of when I would use each.

First, say I'm facing a hex with 4 large companies of elite British Grenadiers. I would tend to just fire the whole stack. Why? Because even if all of these units take punishment they are very unlikely to fail their morale check. Also, if I fired each unit individually, those punishing return fires would probably inflict as much damage to me as my fire did to the enemy. Also, by inflicting a crippling blow to one, you might at least cause it to rout or disrupt.

Now, say I'm facing a hex with a lot of British militia or poor quality units and have large units of my own. I would then tend to fire individually, because even a small amount of damage to a poor unit could cause it and others around it to rout off the field! Just take things on a case by case basis, and go from there.

I agree with what Brett said, with the addition that when playing with the 4-phase model (movement-def.fire-of.fire-melee) I would always use the "fire by sections" because it prevents a "causing-no-damage"-effect of the whole stack (what sometimes happens).

In the one-phase model I prefer the "general decharge", espacilly when facing larger numbers of enemy units that may answer every single shot with 4 or 5 rounds.

I always play with manual DF. Cannot stand computer playing any part of my turn.
