Tyler, Jackson, Taylor, Harrison all served in the active military during the War of 1812 and Monroe was the President (Commander in Chief). My source is: http://www.multied.com/Bio/presidents/military.html If there is a fifth that I missed then so did that website! Who was it if they are wrong? |

Bill, nice site, but they are incorrect. Madison and Monroe were civilians during the War of 1812, as President and Sect of State respectively. Monroe did receive appt as Sect of War following the resignation of Genl John Armstrong in 1814. They are missing one.... however, Jackson, Harrison, Tyler, and Taylor are correct. Well, Polk is the only one I can come up with that hasn't been mentioned, is of the right age and the like. Though, was there a period in 1824 where there was an "interim" president while the House sorted that mess out? I seem to remember hearing something, but can't find it. If that's the case, and that guy is the one you mean Steve, that's a dirty trick ;p |

Nope, it wasn't James K. "Poke 'em" Polk. The election of 1824 was a mess. The son of a former US President (Adams) did not win the popular vote, a man from Tennessee did (Jackson), nor did any candidate have a majority of electoral votes; through various shenanigans (the "corrupt bargain" Jackson supporters called it) the election was tossed to the House....who gave it to the New Englander, J Q Adams (one-term son-of-a one-termer)!!!
