Can anyone help me determine the proper oob for a French infantry regiment 1776-1781 period? I have one source (a rather unscholarly source and so I question it) which gives an organization of: 2 battalions per regt., 1 Grenadier, 1 Light, and 4 Line companies per battalion. Company strength of 105 men. Should I consider the Light co. acting as other light cos. in 1776, ie using extended order? Can't recall any French riflemen; anyone know for sure? Did the French group their Grenadiers or Lights into separate battalions? Did both battalions serve together, or was it more typical to have one batt. in the field and the other at home or serving elsewhere? How were the Regiments brigaded? There must have been some Guards Regts. that were not sent to America - what were their Regimental names and were they organized any differently from the Line Regts? I ask because I want to create a scenario featuring a large French army and I'd like to get it right. All assistance is appreciated. Thanks in advance to any who help. |

Well For what it is worth, from Osprey's <i>French Army in the American War of Independence</i>: Metropolitan Regiments 2 Battalions of 6 Companies each consisting of: 1 Grenadier Co with 84 Grenadiers. Officers, NCOs, etc bring total to 108 1 Chasseur Co with 144 Chasseurs. Officers, NCOs, etc bring total to 171 4 Fusilier Cos with 144 Fusiliers. Officers, NCOs, etc bring total to 171 During wartime an auxiliary recruit company was added at the regimental level, with the same theoretical numbers as the Fusiliers. Regimental staff was 12. "Thus at peak strength, each battalion had 963 officers and men, plus 26 officers and other ranks attached to the auxiliary company, plus the regimental staff for an esablishment of 1,990 all ranks for the two battalions of each regiment. Average battalion strength was about 500, and this was the number used for the battalions sent to the US and Minorca." For the <i>Royal Artillerie</i> (7 Regiments): A regiment consisted of 20 companies divided into 2 battalions of 10 Cos or 5 brigades of 4 cos. Of the 20 companies, 4 were bombadiers, 2 were sappers and 14 were acyual gunners. A company was 71 NCO's and men, 1 Captain and 3 Lieutenants. For the Navy: Marine Company: 96 fusiliers. Other ranks to 121 Marine Bombadier Company: 50 bombadiers. Other ranks to 74 Colonial Troops: No real uniformity. Some regiments had 4 battalions, etc. West Indian and Isle-de-France Battalions: 10 Cos total. 1 Grenadier, 1 Chasseur co each. 40 Grens/Chass. Officers, NCOs, etc to 55. 8 Fusilier Cos. 56 Fusiliers. Officers, NCO's etc to 82. etc, etc, etc Col. Cox NJM |
