As we share a common interest in military history, let me pose a question to you all: In your opinion, what was the best application of battlefield tactics in any battle covered by our Club's three games? Or if you prefer, in what battle of this period do you feel the commanding officer displayed the best generalship? If you wish you may also give an example of what you feel to be the worst display of tactics. I cannot think of any really outstanding examples of great generalship myself, so I ask my esteemed colleagues for their humble opinions. Charging headlong into the Ft. Carillon abattis, over and over again, is right up their for bad generalship. But it's always easy to find fault with another leader's choices. |

Worst has to go to George Washington to my mind, for his siting of Ft Necessity, though you could make arguements for Carillion, or Packenham at New Orleans, or Winder and Blandensburg. Best is harder. Hannah's Cowpens is what strikes me offhand. |

Howe on Long Island. In one of the only times where converging columns actually met and did some damamge his move on Washington's (scattered) forces on Long Island stand out in my mind. Contrast them with Washington's move on Germantown. |
