It is your point of view but the French did really participate in this war of liberation:

The terms of the treaty were that France would recognize and support the sovereignty and independence of the United States of America. In return the United States and France would ally and function as one military unit should war break out between France and Britain. The United States also promised to defend the French West Indies forever.
