Are guns too ineffective, especially at close range, and yet worth far too many victory points? Are FIW guns better than 1776 / 1812 ones? Are guns really just a liability on the battlefield? Should it be possible to capture guns, just as it's possible to capture supply wagons?

Because they are expensive to lose, then it is best to protect them, as much as possible. Most on the time, it is better to move them to safer ground or well behind the lines, then to lose them. However, they are useful to somewhat compensate for the 9 range of some Colonial units and to disrupt enemy columns moving to attack.

In the attack, keep them forward and move with the attacking troops. In defense, try to set them to cover roads or other open areas that will be used for an attack.

In a static position, such as a fort, it is much more difficult to move (and sometimes you can't move them when "emplaced") and still maintain the needed fire power.

It is a balancing act that can sometimes mean the difference in winning or losing.
