wy not a new game about the american revolution???
a game that combines strategy and tactics...
why not john tiller transform his tactical game "1776" in a new revolutionary way. make a big map of northeastern america in the same way he makes the maps of his games, with hexagons, put cities, forts, indian viillages, etc...put other options of strategy tips like the aquisition of supplies, the diplomacy, the training, the construction of boats, stockades...the game was one of maneuver.
imagine you like the commander in chief, organizing your army in a hostil territory, moving them around the bad roads of the wilderness to suprime the rebellion...WHAT A GREAT GAME!!!!
What you say about?

I used Avalon Hill's American Revolution Game which was strategic in nature. We just used the maps and counters, but not the game rules. If troops made contact, then the British and American commanders had to agree to set up a minature game using 25 mm figures and fight the battle. Or they would opt not to fight, and continue to maneuver. Only when both side felt they could win would there be a tactical battle. Coming up with terrain for the battle field was a problem because of the large scale of the Avalon Hill map. We did get a lot of battles, but surviving forces from the previous battles went back to the strategic map at their reduced size.

I can't remember how we handled reinforcements.

We found that evenly matched commanders were needed in order for a battle to happen. If there was a player with a lot of experience, then his hat was like that of Napoleon. That is worth 10,000 men, and therefore a less experienced play would not go to the game table.

This prossed game would be great, but would not be easy to design.

Moving some 500 units of 20 men each, 5 minutes at a time from Philadelphia to Brandywine would get a bit....zzzz... although it would be more exciting than building a stockade 5 minutes at a time. [:D]

Taking this game from tactical to grand strategic would be 'tactical to very impratical' (to paraphrase a cable tv show).[:)]

However, I'm sure some of the more seasoned lobsterbacks in the club would enjoy a 8,640 turn game entitled "Payback - tax collecting in
Boston." [:p]

Perhaps it may be possible to create a large scale strategic level map for 1776, maybe with 1 hex = 5 miles (or perhaps 10 miles?) and with each "unit" representing a division or maybe an entire army? Once contact is made, a fresh tactical level map would be utilized with the various troops deployed at company level for battle. Afterwards, the players would return to the strategic map, having dutifully recorded losses on an Excel document. Reinforcements, losses from desertion, straggling and illness and also garrisons would also need to be recorded. To avoid cheating (and confusion!) it would probably be necessary to have an umpire (probably Al Amos, as he's the club's mapmaker extraordinaire) to oversee the game and draw up lots of suitable tactical level maps.

Guys - I sincerely dont think that our fellow club member meant that we play with 5 minute turns. He means that you plan the building, recruiting of units, guns, etc. on a larger scale.

Thus you would move Washington's army on a larger map and then fight on the battlefields that we have or new ones that Al does on his breaks while as a burger manager (as opposed to a burger meister).

Thus his idea is similar to others that have come down the pike.

And yes, its a pipe dream to assume that John would do this but then John isnt the only fish in the sea of programmers. Not impossible I say but the problem with most other designs is that they all seem to be nice and so on but oh so simple and without depth.

Thus while its a good idea I have a better one:

"You deserve a break today,
So get up and get away,
To MacAmos!"

Lets all go out to Tulsa and meet with Al for lunch! I think that this is much more likely to happen than a new game on the Amercian Rev!
