On this day in 1814, the War of 1812 officially ended as the United States and Britain signed the Treaty of Ghent in Belgium. Again the Lobsterbacks had no chance![8D] |

Hm, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was *us* who won--afterall you wanted to invade Canada and look where it got you ... all invasion attempts repelled, vast stretches of New England permanently occupied, Washington burned and pillaged ... does that look like a victory to you? [:0] |

Yes, the War of 1812 was definitely a loss for the Americans...and if it wasn't for Napoleon rampaging in Europe it might have been a much uglier loss...[:(] But, it's good it did end the way it did, as our two countries have teamed up quite a bit since to complete many a successful campaign... |

[B)]The War of 1812 was a miltary and political draw. The determination of a victor needs to include what each side initially hoped to gain, and what the final results were (in respect to what they hoped to gain). The US initally hoped to gain : 1.Canada 2. The repeal of the Orders in Council (blockade of European ports,and abandonment of impressments by the Royal Navy. It settled by proposing and end to hostilities based on status quo ante bellum (The state in which the belligerents were before war commenced). The British initall offered an armistace based on the repeal of the Orders in Council and but demanded a large Indian buffer state and other extensive territorial cessions. They settled for offering an armistice based on uti possidetis (the state of possesion at then end of hostilies, in order to appear not be abandoning their Indian allies). It was agreed by both sides, in the final Treaty of Ghent to postpone a final determination of boundaries for later negotiations. Of course for better or worse, this final determination was overtaken by the events of the western migrations by the American states. No mention was made of ending impressments (although they were ended against Americans as an RN policy). As usual it was the Indians who lost.[:(!] Nita Hopaii Ed Blackburn Cherokee |

I am reading a book now called <u>The Wildeness War</u>about the Iroquois league and their war against the Patriots between 1777 and 1780, when they were allied to the British. The league was virtually destroyed by the war, which left the old Proclomation line borders open to American expansion, since the British were no longer around to enforce them... Something they don't teach in American schools [xx(] |

Actually, it was a huge blow to the British, and any other power that wanted to "compete" on the national stage, for it represnts the complete demise of direct European influence in America. It just doesn't seem like it at the time. The Spanish lost Pensacola and Mobile and while no friends of the Brits, the Spanish and their support of the Indians was often a check on American interets and expansion. So into that vaccum went the Americans, not the British. Now the British could not influence events from the Indies bases(too far away) and the US was primed for a boom from their control of the Southeast and the recent Louisiana purchase. Of course the French were already gone, so now the US is primed for growth. The SE tribes now could not play British/American/Spanish interests off against one another. They were truly alone and were soon on their way to being removed, and the US would soon become a resource giant. In ways the War of 1812, marks the point where the US begins their ascent to International power. which also meant that the British were on their way out. This is a key strategic change in who controls what, so that the enterprising, aggressive Americans were now in possession of almost unlimited resources, which we see in prominant display in WWI and in a big way WWII. |
