Today I met Phil Prete near the Saratoga battlefield and we drove over and toured the battlesite. We had a grand time - another classic moment in meeting online gamers. Phil is a great host. He even opened the door for me! [:I] Well, that is after I tore off his right side inside door handle! Must come from harvesting all of those potatoes! [:D] Hot and humid, we still trudged over to see the cannon, monuments and views. Saratoga is kept in very good condition. I rate it right up there with Gettysburg for its well groomed avenues and so on. My favorite part of the trip was seeing the anonymous monument to Benedict Arnold. Its just a boot with a plaque dedicating it to the hero of the battle. Phil can correct me if I am wrong but the monument was put up at the end of the 1800s and even by then Arnold's name was taboo as a hero of American arms. A great time was had by both of us. Phil was a great host and we talked all things EAW and then some! Will try and post some pictures in July. |
