Old French General search for skilled allied opponent. (also multiplayer)
Only Talonsof, becouse I tryed HPS and I found it absolutely not realistic and in anycase not Napoleonic War (i.e: Cannons are pratically ineffective)

Artillery fire in the HPS series may seem weak after those 200-300 shots you can get off in BG. But since that is unrealistic I dont think we need compare the two series.

Or how about this: you can run your cavalry up in BG and hide it behind a village, then charge a Grand Battery and wipe it out without it getting off one shot!

If anything the artillery fire in the HPS series is MUCH more realistic. Deployed properly (because its obvious you dont know how to use artillery in HPS) you can shoot an opponent to pieces before he ever gets to you lines. Its all on where you decide to place your guns.

Rather than knock the series how about learning how to play using it?

Considering that the majority of the club members have been playing HPS over BG for about seven years now I think that this issue has long been settled.

Yes, there are elements of BG I miss but I dont miss killer skirmisher stacks, panzerbush and other things like 200-300 man losses from a single battery.

I am glad that those days are over for me.[;)]

Hi Bill,

nice to hear you.

Sorry for my thight comments.
I know you spent a lot of efforts to develope your games and I don't wont to ruin all this work with a superficial evaluation, due to my inesperience on HPS games.

But it's a fact that some characteristics left me in strong doubt.

In the Talons games I defeated enemies practically only
with the accurate use of the artilleries (like Napoleon used to do, due to the fact he was an arty officer, before than a field General).

In HPS this is practically impossible.
So, may be interesting as medieval battle, but as Napoleonic one, this aspect is really weak.

But, what is the problem, you are the designer and can correct it...
I cannot but you can...

Also the defensive phase is quite ineffective. If an attacker push with decision, the defensive fire, only, cannot stop his action.
If Napoleon had an HPS engine at his disposal, the battle of Waterloo would be his greater Victory, and the Duke had no chance to resist to Erlon, Cavalry and Guards charges.

You know, the history was different.(The Duke stops the French Guards only shooting with rifles of some brigades in extended line. At the first shot, more the 100 French Guards felt on ground. I challange everybody to reply this action with the HPS engine)....

The Talonsoft games had a lot of defects. In ex. the Zoc zone is badly managed, in particular for the Cav. (some infantry units, also weakened, can stop the strongest Cavalry, and this is not hystoric), the Skirms units can act as modern commandos and so on...
but Talonsoft games had not the actual experience.

Who developes Napoleonic simulation today should have all the elements to arrange an accurate simulation...

Anyway this is
only my relative opinion...

At your disposal for further details

My Best Regards

Ramon

Ramon,

Anyone can alter the pdt file to increase the effectiveness of artillery (and muskets too). This is the case for both BG and HPS.

The HPS engine has many enhancements and improvements over the BG engine, so it's worth giving it a second chance.

However, there are a few things that are still better about the old BG engine - nice map graphics, cavalry counter charging and the ability to form square in the defensive phase. The HPS engine doesn't handle square forming very well.

If anyone here is looking for a game, perhaps a small to medium sized NIR (I also have PTW, BGW and HPS Eckmuhl and Waterloo, but not the other HPS titles, unless you want to play an ACW game or the recently released Renaissance), send me an email to fow65 at yahoo.co.uk
