Post subject:  Quick Update on Manual Defense Fire - Jena

Tim Goodwin and are I at turn 25 of 42 turns. The battle is tense. We both have decent looking lines and despite some fatigued units our armies are in decent order.

In other words ... no blitz!

While there is a limited amount that you can do with the Manual Defense Phase (no overrunning skirmishers to clear the way for infantry) we are enjoying the battle very much.

A short recap:

Gudin held the line for the first 10 turns until Friant made his presence felt. Gudin is holding the center and right while Friant holds the left. Morand is now deploying to my left and is going to give the Prussian troopers a hot foot if they dont pull back.

Artillery was set up first in the frontline west of Hassenhausen and then I pulled them back and have set up a secondary postion to the SE of that location. They are firing over the slight depression in the ground south of the village. Another set of guns guards the right.

The Prussian cav have been held in check to some extent by the French cav and inf. I took some guns of the Prussians last turn but the bn. was routed back after a melee on its flank.

Bernadotte is starting to arrive (Beaumont's dragoons just showed up) with the infantry coming on in a turn or so. Thus my second corps is going to give me some much needed strength. Maybe to start pushing the line westward.

I am sure that more Prussians are on the way. Either way this is going to be a tough nut to crack for the French.

I will update this thread after the game is over.

Hi Bill
Yes MDF makes a good battle overall I think. More realistic perhaps.

However I have recently decided I quite like the small scale blitzes Jena 10min moves allow. They seem to simulate an intangible factor in the Napoleonic warfare. In a way the unpredictability simulates the lack of ability to command everything how you wish. They also create an ebb and flow element that was an aspect of most Napoleonic battles.

I don't like the 15 minute blitz though thatis similar to Peiper's penetration in the Ardennes in 44 [:D]

salute!

To co-ordinate such intricate manoeuvres in the heat of battle you are demonstrating an absolute ability to command everything how you wish, yes? There are clearly two ways of looking at this and that is why some prefer MDF or embedded melee.[;)] To each to his own, of course...[:)]

Hi Antony
Yes good point I agree with that argument as well. I was actually referring to being the defensive player not the aggressor. Ie the receiver of a such an attack. I was thinking maybe of a house rule where you cannot blitz artillery might be a nice compromise in the 10 minute move.

But I will add I am always happy to play embedded melee. I actually like all 3 forms for different reasons. Each offers aspects of Napoleonic warfare that are realistic and not realistic.

Helga a round here please[:D].
