Post subject:  Roads vs. Pikes

If you note in my previous post on March Rates that there is quite a difference between a road and a pike in Campaign Jena.

Rich H. pointed out to me that infantry only move one hex more on a Road than in a Clear hex per turn.

This was intentional actually due to the fact that:

1. A common road didnt help a Column that much

and

2. Players were using those roads to get in around their opponent's flank

Thus the difference in a Road and Pike was intentional and it solved a two-fold problem.

Now the question comes: was there THAT much of a difference?

I am pondering this question a bit. Should I increase the distance that infantry can move via Roads?

John Tiller reminded me today that we cant use fraction or decimals in the terrain cost lines. Thus the only way to accurately model it would be to increase the existing MP allowances for each type while increasing the terrain costs as well.

But is it all worth it?

I am doing some reading on battles and at one of them two columns marched parallel and one was on what we would call a "Road" while the other was on a "Pike" and the latter was outdistancing it due to the conditions of the roads. I pondered, maybe the Road was actually a Path but the weather conditions would have rendered that totally unsuitable for wheeled transport.

So my conclusion is that while it really is quite a difference between road and pike to go and "muck" with the MP rates at this stage of the game to achieve a closer margin of difference between Road and Pike is probably not justified.

So rather than spend more time on this I am just going to leave it as is. Rich and I are spending some time trying to come up with a standard that would work. It appears that there are players that cant cope with a movement rate about 10 for infantry! I was rather surprised to find this out. Frankly I prefer historical accuracy but hey, different strokes for different folks.

I do know that if we had the Reachable Hexes ability in the series that it might solve some of the issues that the players are having over varying rates. Add a button to the Toolbar, add in a hotkey and menu item the players could then just with a click know how far they can go in a turn.

Its been suggested - not sure if it will fly this time round.

But we keep trying! [:D]

Jim,

I believe they did have them and used them to pole vault down the roads.[:0]

Now, Ed, don't go spreading rumours. You know very well the pole vaults were only used to cross rivers during combat operations... [;)]

Bill,
you obviously have not played as the Russians in a while. The purpose of those militia is not to use their pikes but to wear out the French cavalry and use up artillery ammo... Well, that is ho[:0]w I use them

Fix the two hour night time in Waterloo and I'll be a happy camper ! Trying to recover from 18 hours of battle with just a couple of night turns is downright rude ![8D]

Oh, sorry, was this about March rates ?[;)] I like to have the option of 10min, 15min and dare I say even 30min turns and that would do it for me. No need to change anything else...
