Post subject: Howitzer Question

Was a French 24lb Howitzer also known as a 5.7 or 5.5 inch howitzer?

From Bowden's Napoleon and Austerlitz pg 69:

"Because different manufacturers had different calibers, the smaller, lighter howitzers were listed as obusier de 5 pounces, 4 lignes, or as obusier de 5 pounces, 6 lignes, or as obusier 5 pounces, 7 lignes. In the later years of the Empire, all of these different lighter howitzers would simply be referred to as obusiers de 24, which described the howitzer by the weight of its projectile, that being 24 livres (pounds)."

Hope this helps.
