Fine book on the 1806 campaign out from Scott Bowden of Pascal Bressonnet's fine work on the campaign.

I cant say enough about this fine work. I got my copy pre-pub price.

I poured over it immediately. Plan on sitting down sometime and reading it from cover to cover.

You lucky man, Bill.

A mate at a local wargames club had his copy on Wednesday night at the gathering for us all to Ooooo and Aaaaahh over. Beautiful beautiful book with so much information inside. Adore the 'wargamer viewpoint' watercolours of the battlefield situations and its development.

I got to read a little bit about Saalfeld and the death of the fool, Louis. There was even an entertaining info box about the model-hussar who bested him in combat! Apparently that bloke was the Hussar's hussar.

You've spent your money well, I think. :)

No. I just read about it in a thread in the Les Grognards forum @ battlefront.com when it came out. One of the posters there was receiving a copy. It sounded... hmm...what's a word that means 'sits back and sighs and feels a visceral tug of the wish to read that at one's leisure'? It's gotta be a little more than consumerism or envy.

Great to see that there really is a place for beautifully made books with special purpose.

When I visited Les Invalides in August, they had a exhibition off to the side of Napoleon's Tomb. It was an excellent display of the many volumes produced from N's expedition to Egypt. It was published 10 years after the 1799 campaign: hence 1809 and => 200 years from the present. The full set were splendid large books, like Apogee, with wonderous illustrations. Truly crafted books. Very impressive.

Napoleon took artists with him to Egypt thus I am wondering how many of the illustrations were made by any of those men.

Yes this book looks amazing. Might have to save up my Francs and buy it.

Have you guys ever seen the full colour plated version of Anatomy of Glory. I think it has 85+ amazing colour plates of Tondu's guard. I have a copy I like just to browse every now and again. I have read it once and now know all the first names of the Old Guard[:D]

Also the Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars is a great wargames companion it's the Esposito manual for West point also expensive but a superb book for the wargamer. Not quite as beautiful as the Apogee by the looks though.

Yes, Bill, ALL the stuff in the Egyptian volumes were done by the scientists, archeologies, engineers/surveyers, historians and artists that N took along. It's hard to appreciate now what a surge in knowledge those volumes were to Europe at that time. Moreover, the plates of the half-submerged (in sand) temples and cities is just amazing. More than pictures of them today now that they have been cleaned up for tourists.

A cute anecdote from the Napoleon in Egypt by Paul Strathern was that the soldiers quickly got sick and tired of the learned types and nicknamed them 'the donkeys'. Thus, when it came time to form squares to defend against the Mamelukes, the cry would go out to "prepare to received cavalry! Carts and donkeys into the centre!" LOL

You should check the catalogue at your state library. You americans have probably had yours long enough for them to consider buying sets. You might be surprised what you can find...

That said, a resproduction or publishing online of the works would be amazing. Brief search did find me: http://www.rmn.fr/francais/les-musees-e ... ypte-Musee about the exposition, but not about whether bits of it were online.
