To take the poll go to:

This has to do with me splitting off howitzer sections in future titles.

What I have done in the past is to combine the howitzer sections into 4 gun units rather than have them put into 2 gun sections.

Let your voice be heard on the matter! [:)]

One thing you might want to mention, is that while a lot of countries atrillery batteries were split 6 guns/2 howitzers (or 4/2 for some horse art), the British split theirs 5/1.
This clearly does not give a lot of firepower to the howitzer section, but on the other hand, it does allow for lobbing that shot into that blind hollow or over that hill, when you know the other guy is there.

What I have done in the past is combine the sections. Not very historical though.

Sort of a trade off.

Surely the best approach would be to include both batteries and gun sections in the oobs and then create alternative scenarios with gun sections. This would allow gamers to pick which version they'd prefer to play ... and then maybe play the other way next time.

If anyone is interested in seeing gun sections in action, there are company level scenarios in the Waterloo expansion pack that use gun sections.

Far too much work for me Rich. Don't know about you but I like to watch an occasional NBA Finals game now and then! [:D]

Its similar to including a full cav regiment version of the scenarios. I do that as an option but not as a default thing.

Quick update on the poll: we are running 7 votes for #1 (more sections the better) and 7 votes for #2 (keep it down to a minimum) and 1 vote for #2 (no opinion).

My main goal is to avoid putting out 1 gun sections. Frankly the lowest I will use is 4 gun sections.

Mainly for those nations that only had one howitzer in a battery I will not break them out into their own section.

I would like to hear feedback on Austerlitz or Jena where the Russian Licornes were split out to form their own unit.

For future French batteries I would take two batteries and split out the two howitzers to form four gun sections leaving the remaining guns for the two batteries in their own units.

Thus 2 eight gun batteries of 6 six pound guns and 2 howitzers would be form three units: 2 six gun batteries of 6 six pound guns each and 1 unit of four howitzers.

Bill, I am curious to your aversion to 1 or 2 gun howitzer sections. I understand that splitting them out can be a time consuming task, but is it that, or you just don't feel a 1 or 2 gun section is worth it in the game? I find them quite useful, either as a stand alone, or as a remnant of a larger battery. 1 gun, either a howitzer or a gun, supported by 1 or 2 skirmisher companies, make a very good road block or picket, particularly on the road just behind the crest or in the woods, where they get stumbled upon and can fire at point blank range. Those single howitzers are also handy for interdiction and harassment fire over/behind intervening objects. JMHO

Well they add to the counter count frankly. And they were NOT used as a road block with skirmishers. Never heard of them being used that way.

The concept is to keep down the amount of small gun sections. It adds to the amount of troops that can march on a road too. Can you imagine if I split out every howitzer section how long the (already) road columns would be?
