Nobody was injured fortunately. But quite a lot of damage. Nick Buttler who lives near Christchurch tells me there was some minor damage and powercuts to his house, but that's back on again now.

Present and accounted for! Thank god for our building code. I have family and friends all over the area the quake struck.
In Wellington it was a good shake as well. Our windows rattled but no damage.

In Christchurch the damage is extensive bad for our economy at a fragile time really. The best thing of all is that no one has been killed just two serious injuries. Lots of ripped up roads and collapsed brick chimneys/buildings

Thanks for the post guys a bit of a bad time for kiwis a nasty plane crash on the same day at one of our glaciers as well.

Yes well - Wife arrived in Christchurch on Friday night for a yoga retreat and was thrown out of bed at 0430 Sat morning....I was woken as well with the shake...then a phone call 10min later :lol:

Wife ended up talking to Aussie Sky news and being on the tv saying how the worms had come out the days before (one of many signs nature gives of iminent earthquakes) and she and one of her workmates had had a premonition on the Thu and talked about it :shock:

I prefer earthquakes to terrorists so we take the good with the acts of god down at the 'utter most ends of the earth' :)

American Military in Hawaii were the first to offer assistance, thank you yanks! Now where was that shovel and wheelbarrow?

You see Mike, I knew that you would always land on your feet. Glad to hear that everyone in your family is well, particularly your wife as she was located at the epicenter. And thank you for your expression of gratitude for the American aid. I am glad that collectively we can help.

Colin, I must say that I am equally glad to hear that you emerged unscathed. I finally sent you another Austerlitz turn. Pretty sure that I now have you totally surrounded :D .....of course, in all this fog.....it might be I who is totally surrounded. :shock: Bill, my compliments. You certainly did make the start of a scenario interesting with the utilization of a simple weather pheonomenon.

As a structural engineer by profession, I raise a toast to my Kiwi bretheren. Building codes are a very important start toward saving lives, but it takes much more than that to actually be successful. The design engineer must be competent, the Contractor must be conscientious and both the accountant who wants to cut costs and the CEO who wants to put more money into his year end bonus while sacrificing the safety of the general public must be strictly avoided or overcome. It is a very involved process that can easily be undone by anyone in the chain that forgets their duty to their citizenry. The Kiwis obviously got it right. It's good to hear our kiwi friends are ok. I'm mightily impressed at the spirit you guys show in an emergency. Good on ya!

I remember how good some of the buildings were when I lived in NZ. During one quake my wife said stuff was falling off shelves and the old wooden house we lived in was swaying and creaking furiously, but the modern building I was in at work didn't move at all due to the 'rubbery' foundations. Just a slight ripple in a glass of water. It's good to know that things are done properly...

Thanks again guys from all kiwis. Our wooden houses and the time of the quake (4.35am) is what saved the day fatality wise. Lots of damage though to the brick houses and buildings of Christchurch.

Have to say the yanks offering to assist us immediately is just awesome. I wish my country showed more respect for the USA. Unfortunately the George W was about as popular as an All Black defeat over here.

Our boys are doing their part in Afganistan at least.

Actually I happened to be on the South Island skiing when it happened…. Woke up at 4-30am in my hotel room on the forth floor because of the weird shaking which lasted for about 15 seconds.

Two days after that I drove to Christchurch and NWC members have nothing to worry - Willows in Christchurch city centre are just fine and sustained no damage !!!

[There is a strong evidence that these Willows were brought to Christchurch by French whaler in 1840s from willow sprouts grown on Napoleon’s grave in St Helen island]

Now that is something I never knew!! Thank you for that I think it is rather important and an expidition to secure cuttings for the future should be in order next time I'm down that way. Thank you Sir. Helga a round of drinks for this fine fellow and put it on the New Zealand Earthquake Commission's account :D
