Post subject: | Any French scholars out there? |
Does anyone know what it might mean for an infantry division to bivouac, or make camp, on a road a cheval? When I first found this expression in Davout's dispatch to Napoleon in regards to the just arrived (at Regensburg) division of General Friant, I thought it must be a transcription error. However I have since found the expression used again (I think in Lefebvre's dispatch to Napoleon on the evening of April 20, after the Battle of Abensberg), again in regards to an infantry formation. Does anyone have thoughts on what this expression might mean? Thank you in advance for any comments. |

[F., lit., on horseback.] Astride; with a part on each side; -- used specif. in designating the position of an army with the wings separated by some line of demarcation, as a river or road. |

Of course! That makes perfect sense now. Thank you. I have been puzzling over that expression for a week now. Maybe it's time to upgrade my old $2 pocket French-English dictionary. ![]() |
