I was just thinking - it would be interesting to read the CNN headlines about a Napoleonic battle: Borodino - "This is Julie Noteworthy coming to you live from the CNN News Center. Today, the French general, Napoleon, lead his men in a costly attack today, throwing away men's lives needlessly. Reports are filtering back to Paris (via French Twitter) and the mobs filled the streets briefly before being chased off by the National Guard. Meanwhile, reports are that his army will not last the winter. I turn now to our reporter on the spot, Geraldo Riverso. Geraldo, what is the situation like there on the ground." "It's just horrific, Julie, the smoke from the battle fills your lungs and visibility is next to nothing. A poor old Russian man sits near me nursing his wound and sipping from a bottle of vodka. He holds his innards towards his stomach. I don't think he will last long. Men are piled in long lines where they once proudly stood in battle. Now it is all for nothing as they lay dead atop their comrades. A French captain hurries past me. One arm dangles at his side. Sir, can you tell me what is going on at the front?" "Mais non, monsieur, ..." [rushes past Geraldo] "Wow, what was that ... a caisson just exploded in the redoubt named after the brave Russian officer who commanded the garrison. More French cavalrymen ride back to the rear, their uniforms blackened by the smoke from the cannon. I tell you, I haven't seen anything so bad since I left Tulsa, Oklahoma after reporting on the mail truck accident last year! Well this doesn't compare to THAT but you get my meaning. This is just bloody awful, Julie. Geraldo Reverso signing off." "Well there you have it. Reports are in that the French government may topple at any moment. Come back in five minutes after a word from our sponsors and Rona Barrett will take you live to an interview with Josephine, the former wife of Napoleon. She has information about the government that inquiring minds want to know!" ![]() |

"Hi, this is Julie Noteworthy coming to you live from the CNNNNR (CNN Napoleonic Newsroom for you that did not know this). I am speaking live with Marechal Bessieres from a POW tent in the Prussian camp. (addresses Bessieres) Tell me Mon. Bessieres, are you being treated well? What are the conditions like where you are?" "Bonjour Julie, they are treating me well, I am getting good meals (if you can call Prussian food good), I tell them NOTHING!" "Well that is good to hear. Are you getting your Red Cross package on a regular basis?" "Mais oui! I just received it yesterday. The blanket was most helpful. These Prussian swine do not provide us with much during the night. North Germany is bitter cold. I hear nothing about the war but the rumor has it that our cavalry will rescue me any day now!" "Well that is good to know, Marechal. Are relations between you and the Prussian general staff good?" "Yes, we swap war stories at night when the officers are done working for the day. Ah, they are not happy about Feldmarechal Peters and the way that he destroyed such good cavalry at Jena! All of their fine cavalry wasted. Bah! It is just the way that Prussians handle cavalry! Now if I were leading them things would be different!" (Julie aside - "Er, yes, maybe all of them would have been captured!") "Good luck to you Marechal. We have run out of time for this segment of the program. Please come back tomorrow to find out if Marechal Bessieres escapes!" |

I looked in Google books and found this title: The battle of Waterloo, containing the series of accounts published by .... http://books.google.com/ebooks/reader?i ... put=reader Google Books is maddening in the way that they do titles so just go to the link and read through the various articles in the book. John Booth was the fellow the put them all together. Sorry ... moving fast and cannot offer up more info on this one. The style is the usual literature of the period - the officers were bold ... etc. Never a negative word about their own military as that would be censured by the Editor. They just didn't do that in those days very often and remain in business. |

Hmmmm....now I wonder what would happen to the polls if I opened and closed all my Hanoverian posts say, about a 1,000 times each....... ![]() ![]() ![]() Why I'll bet that the BBC Hanoverian Bar Talk ratings would simply shoot through the roof! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Even so, it seems that the two contending posts have been composed by Coalition Officers. One must wonder what has happened to the vaunted creativity of the French. It would seem that the initiative decidedly lies with the Coalition. ![]() ![]() Pourquoi, mon ami? ![]() ![]() ![]() |
