Ah yes the Gastronomy a Cheval! Or perhaps a mountain mans guide to frost bite prevention. Or Bear Grylls guide to fire lighting. No seriously any serious student of the period should begin with Chandlers 'Campaigns of Napoleon' then there are many more contemporary works to study but this book is an icon if the period. |

I've always enjoyed reading F. Loraine Petre's work. Unfortunately he did not cover the 1812 campaign, he did however produce the following titles which may be of interest to you: Napoleon's Conquest of Prussia - 1806 Napoleon's Campaign in Poland, 1806-1807

Napoleon & Berlin by Micheal Leggiere. Good read on the two campaigns to take Berlin as well as the aftermath and events leading up to Leipzig and to include the part that the Army of the North played in the battle. |

Another one I find fantastic when playing our games is a large book called the A Military History and Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars, Vincent J. Esposito, John R. Elting. Its a book prepared for West point study so a very military perspective. I bought it years ago and have found it invaluable in understanding Napoleons method. |

also Steve read the art of war chapter in campaigns of Napoleon several times. They hide secrets in books! Even electronic ones. |

Since you did not exclude fiction, I can say this is a great read and it has some big battles against Prussia as well. |

You can try also a few memoirs from soldiers who fought there... Les Memoires du Sergent Bourgogne (an account of the Russian Campaign) comes to mind... but You may have to refresh you French before reading it because I don't think it has been translated...

I would avoid later works by Digby-Smith ... he is notorious for being inaccurate. Austerlitz: 1805 by Robert Goetz on the other hand is an outstanding read. He has a nice order of battle in the back of his book. He also did all of the maps on his own as publishers are really stinky about wanting to pay for them. More good reading is the entire series on the 1809 campaign by John Gill. Also his book "With Eagles to Glory" about the Confederation of the Rhine forces that fought in 1809 is a classic as well. Others? Marengo and Hohenlinden by James Arnold - NICE OB info and maps too. Hohenlinden is one of the least written about battles for its size. The Road to Rivoli by Boycott-Brown - an account of the entire 1796-97 campaign. Really good book and has nice maps. OB info is given as well on a higher level but he gives info on the units in each command as you read the text. For a nice overview of the Peninsular you can get Julian Paget's book on the Peninsular War. He goes over the campaigns twice. Once from a higher level and then from a battle level. Also this atlas is VERY nice and comes with a slipcase: http://www.amazon.com/Peninsular-War-At ... 733&sr=8-1 You can get it from one of the Sellers for about 30 bucks and save on cost. I got this one earlier this year and it covers the battles of the Spanish army too unlike most English books on the conflict in Spain and Portugal. That should keep you for some time!

Oh! good to know, I always fought that it wasn't, and after a very short search I see it on >>amazon<< it's for me the best personal account of a soldier retreating from Moscow. I really recommend it.
