I cannot believe what I'm seeing! In two games now I've seen French inf bns walk right up to Allied cav sqns/rgts in good order and fire!! We know in real life the cav would have op-charged them once they got in sight. In the igo-ugo system I can't, and terrain and weather has allowed the inf to get upon the cav ... right in front of them in their "charge cone" etc, etc.

I'm going to have to find historical players in the future! ... well realistic ones.

Accidently coming upon cav is one thing, but deliberately advancing upon them.... grrrrr....

Not totally unhistorical but definitely not the norm.

Happened many times during 1813 and into other eras as well. Just depended on the circumstances.

I would say against Disordered cav it is ok.

Bill your changes in Austerlitz have made cavalry much better.

What I mean is losing them does not matter as much (VP wise) and killing infantry en masse is both easier and more costly (VP wise).

Its much better and makes players more historical.

Earlier titles such as Waterloo encourage the tactics Al is referring too. At Austerlitz if you stick your infantry out there not in square expect pain (to quote clubber lang).

Yes, pain! Severe and unrelenting. I can personally vouch for the truth in General Knox's words. I thumbed my nose at his cavalry in our first engagement. I was a 2nd Lieutenant, what did I know? I saw his horsemen get this certain look in their eyes. I laughed, until they started charging. It really was not nearly as funny when his cavalry struck home.

From that day forward, I resolved to always laugh with the good General, but never at him. Oh no, never at him again!

I think the Austerlitz title is really good at encouraging historical play thanks too:

The VP changes for infantry casualties (up) and cav (down)
The stacking and multiplier changes for cavalry.
The ability for infantry to melee cavalry in cover (a great addition preventing unhistorical 'blocking')
The 10 minute moves.
The generally C grade morales for line troops making routs more common
The movement rates

Each of these combined with the powerful artillery and a really good game balance make such a game as Austerlitz historical HPS's best simulation of the period so far IMHO

Bill can we have the next one asap please

The Napoleonic period was the last true combined arms period until WW2 really. The infantry and artillery from 1830-1918 dominated. Only the introduction of Armour in WW2 brought back the cavalry arm!

I think this is the strength of the N period. You must balance your combined arm forces to be a great player. Over reliance on one will get you in trouble. HPS Austerlitz embodies this idea.

Yes, please! Lets have the next title!!!

PLEASE!!!

Should not be much longer guys but if you bother Rich Hamilton with emails about "hey, when will the next game be out" I will purposely ask John Tiller to delay it six months! :D

Almost there - just waiting on some things and have to finish up the Getting Started Help file (need artwork to get that done).

I would like to try out my format with 15 min. moves and use the No Melee Elimination rule. Maybe the 10 min. move could go away ...

Have never really tried out my MP format expanded to a 15 min. move yet. Might be something for me to tinker with after I take my packages (Ebay stuff I sold) to the PO (no, Al Amos doesn't work at this one) and get some K-rations from the store (M&Ms).

I will give you one hint about the next title I am doing - it has British in it. Ok, that's it ... :P

I also get goose bumps when I see opposing infantry calmly march up to my Guard Grenadiers a Cheval and shoot in their faces.
Reality check required here.......

As a reaction on that way of Inf. attack, I use the House Rule in my games:
Inf. unit may attack Cav. unit with fire only from the maximal range at first,
if Cav. unit persist and not retreat, then Inf. unit may attack from the minimal range.
Cav. always had a chance to get away using their speed and maneuverability,
if they did not intend to charge, of course. So, we have to give the chance to our Cav.
Isn't it? This is R&H (Realism and Historicity)! :D
