He looks beat, worn out, bushed. "One of those tasty lemonades please, Helga," he says to here as she walks up to his table, "yes and one of those slices of Prussian toast too." Utterly worn out it is all he can do to stay awake! The lights are dim tonight as the Cajun band is getting ready to set up. "Hmm, that should stimulate me a bit I guess," the dragoon muses. The doors swing open and in comes Monsieur Palomo. "Well there you are, you rascal. Trying to bug out of our match I suppose." "Oh, its you, Herr Palomo. No, I have not forgotten about our battle. As a matter of fact I now should be able to devote more of my time to it." "Oh sure, that is what you said last time you, er, well, just last time," sputters the Marechal. "Yes, so true. It's always the same. Work until the candle wax is flowing down to the base, eyes blurred, and still I find it hard to concentrate on those niceties of life, mainly running you ragged on the battlefield." "I should laugh," says Mon. Palomo, "the only time you ever ran me ragged was in a lopsided playtest game." "Well, I must cling to those moments ...," he says, feeling the weariness work on his shoulders. "Here you are my dear, toast shaken not stirred," Helga purrs. "Thank you much Frau Helga," he replies giving her a broad wink. "Let me know if these French toads give you any problems. Not that I have much strength for fighting but one tired Prussian can always defeat four Frenchies any day." "Besides, I feel like a new man now that I am loosed from the chains of .... well it's all over and I feel like celebrating. I am looking forward to that Cajun band striking up a lively tune!" "So what was so tiring that Herr Peters is so wiped out?" says Frau Helga. "You can ask Herr Palomo. He knows something of the business." "Oh but my lips are sealed. Even though we fight on different sides in THIS struggle my honor precludes me from revealing your secret," whispers Herr Palomo looking this way and that. "Well it won't be long I suppose and it will no longer BE a secret. But the struggle was worth it, eh mon Marechal?" "Yes, we gave those Turks a good fight. For a Prussian toady you fight particularly well with a saber. Even if you do not match up to my prowess with the blade." "Ha! Tell Helga how you tripped on your cape!" says Herr Peters, exploding in laughter. Others in the Tavern look over at their table, shrug and then return to the conversations. "You know that that was some dog that ran into my way!" "Oh sure, oh sure. Well here comes Herr Ludwig. I have business with him tonight. I shall be in communication with you shortly, Herr Francisco the Magnificent. Until then, occupy your time with some juggling or other triffles and I shall do my best to be at your tent with saber in hand and on a fine steed. Then we shall see who can run down the rabbit!" "Now to my toast!" |

A courier comes into the tavern. He looks around and finally sees Herr Peters in the corner. Hurrying over he hands him a message. The dragoon officer reads the message and laughs heartily. "Ah, so he stirs himself at last! Now we shall see what he has left in him," he chuckles. "Take this down and see that it gets to the Emir. Two officers came in but only one came out. Then three came in and six went out. Finally, four went in but only two came out. Let's see if the old fox can figure out this riddle!" he muses. "Yes sir! I shall deliver the message!" replies the worn courier. "Well you may rest for the night here if you wish. There certainly is no rush now. He won't get the message for a day or so anyway. Let him wait." "As you wish, sir." The dragoon officer continues to muse to himself on the message from the Emir. What possibly could he have meant by his reference to "a rising in the mist?" And what of "two token swords on the morrow?" |
