The windows of the tavern are open on this bright and sunny day, allowing the gentle breeze of warm spring air to waft through the tavern, bringing with it the subtle odors of newly budding life and replacing the stale air that permeated the establishment during the winter months. Most of the officers are in the field fighting one another in their ceaseless struggle to discern who will emerge as the final Master of Europe.

The Commander of the Hanoverian Brigade has his chair leaned against the wall, boots propped upon his usual table as he casually sips from a mug of frosty, Belgian ale. Occasionally he glances at the adjacent chair that is leaned in against the table, wondering what has become of ‘Die Ratte’ and contemplating what he will do to the Frenchman who orchestrated the demise of his favored Lieutenant once he catches him.

A Hanoverian courier interrupts the Colonel’s thoughts as he enters the open tavern door and purposefully strides up to his commanding officer. Pulling himself to attention, he snaps a smart salute to his veteran commander. “At ease, Ensign”, says the Colonel as he returns the respectful gesture, never bothering to remove his boots from their comfortable resting place on the table top.

“I have a message for you from Lieutenant Peccolo, sir”, says the young courier.

“Uh oh, I sincerely hope you are not here to tell me that another of my young officers has been killed”, replies the red coated Colonel as he takes the proffered dispatch. He carefully unfolds the note and begins to read…..I bring you the glory of my first victory……resounding defeat of the French at Kulm…..three French Divisional Commanders captured……64 pieces of artillery taken…….. The Colonel’s grin grows wider with every word, his face nearly splitting by the time he finishes reading the post. The Colonel draws out his quill and scrawls a quick post in return…..Job well done Lieutenant…..meet me in the Rhine Tavern once you have secured your many prisoners…….your drinks are on me. Looking up, the Hanoverian Commander hands his own dispatch to the expectant courier. “Ensign, please deliver this message back to Lieutenant Peccolo.”

“Yes ,sir”, says the Ensign as he snaps another smart salute and turns to leave. As he nears the door, he hears the Colonel say, “Oh, and Ensign, there is one more thing.”

Turning back to face his Commander, the Ensign says, “Sir?”

The Hanoverian Commander is smiling as he says, “Please tell Lieutenant Peccolo that we are changing his nickname. No longer will he be known as Der Singvogel (The Songbird). From now on, he will be known as Der Wurger (The Shrike)!”

Sir, I'm looking for the bandsmen, thinking of having a parade.

At their table several officers of the Tirailleurs du Po battalion were stirring themselves from a hard bout of drinking away the memories of a recent fight on the carnage strewn fields of Jena.
"What in the god's name is that awful noise?" grumbled one of them, holding his head in hand.
Oompa, Oompa, Oompa! echoed through the open windows of the tavern.
"That my fine fellow, is the sound of the band practicing it's march song," the Lieutenant replied.
"I'd rather hear the cannonade at Closewitz again," muttered his comrade.
Oompa, Oompa, Oompa!
"You can thank that fine 2nd Lt over there," the Lt of Light Infantry nodded to where the gentlemen of the Hanoverian Brigade held their usual court.
He caught the attention of Helga, who walking over asked, "Yes sir?"
"A saucer of milk please."
"What for?"
"i saw a cat here about a moment ago," he explained.
"A cat?"
"Yes, and with all the birds fluttering about in here, I'd rather like to encourage him to hang around."

Hmmm, this new Hanoverian bears watching, even if his nom de guerre is a bit odd...... Shrike, :| Shriek, :) Shrek? :D

Just to be clear though, the oompah band is the sole and exclusive provenance of Eugene, a former officer, and member of the old Armee du Rhin, and as a trademarked outfit shall not be misappropriated by any non-confederation Germanic army.

Baa haa haa :D :D :D So, there is a Frenchman with a sense of humor! Sir, may I offer you some French whine, oops, I mean wine

Der Wurger feels the need to sing, und, Herr Marchal, it ist nicht ein Ompa band, es it a brass band! Hit it boys...

Schatz, ach Schatz
