Two German officers enter the Rhine Tavern, their uniforms dusty and worn from a recent engagement. The senior officer is a Hanoverian, although he is dressed in the uniform of a King’s Dragoon Guardsman. He is accompanied by the black clad Commander of the Duchy of Brunswick’s 2nd Line Battalion. Their mood is a bit more somber today as they cross the tavern and seat themselves at the table often frequented by the officers of the Hanoverian Brigade.

Noting their arrival, Helga scoops up a shot glass and a bottle of Jagermeister and approaches the table where the two officers are seated. “Well, you two are in early today”, she says as she sets the bottle and glass on the table. “I think I know what the good Brigadier is drinking, but what can I get for you Captain Bell?”

“Whiskey for me”, replies the Brunswick officer. “Neat, if you will.”

“Oh, and if you would, my dear”, says the Hanoverian Brigadier, “Please direct Marechal Bardon and Lieutenant Morehouse to our table on their arrival. The good Captain and I have some gifts for them today.”

Ah, bested by Bardon's Blitzkrieg, I see!

The Marechal walked purposefully across the tavern floor, intent on regaining his customary seat and looking for the next freshly minted ensign, cadet or sous-lieutenant who might be in line to purchase drinks for the assembled senior officers. His uniform was, as usual, impeccable with just the faintest trace of dust to show that there was indeed some campaigning done, a battle fought.

As he crossed the tavern, Helga caught his eye and gestured to a table frequented by the coalition. Two familiar gentlemen sat at the table, looking a bit more quiet than usual. Before pulling a chair out from under a lowly subaltern to join the two, the old grognard called to Helga, " Should you see Lt. Morehouse, please send him this way. As he has done the lions share of the work this day, it is only fitting that he be afforded a seat of honor."

The Hanoverian Brigadier stands at the approach of his respected adversary. "Marechal Bardon, it is always good to see you, sir, although the circumstances could be better, at least from our perspective today."

Seating himself as the Commander of the Vieille Garde pulls up a chair, the Brigadier motions for Helga. "What will you have today, sir? Your drinks are on us."

Helga, the usual!

And another cask for my horse since the good brigadier is paying. Or is this round courtesy of Herr Bell?

Cheers!

"No, no" says the Hanoverian officer, "Captain Bell is actually under my charge until a permanent leader for the Brunswick Brigade can be found. Your Lieutenant Morehouse has managed to place enough stress on him these last few weeks. He does not need the additional worry of having to pay for everyone's drinks. It is well known that the coffers of the Hanoverian Brigade run deep, but I must admit that your recent victory has somewhat impacted our more immediate reserves. Which reminds me", he continues as he stands and unbuckles his sword belt. "I believe this is yours now, Marechal", says the Brigadier as he places his sword on the table in front of his most recent French adversary. "It never does to get too attached to one's weapon it seems. I do trust that you will take good care of it, sir. No doubt there will come a day when I will want it back."

Sir,

I will leave the decision as to what to do with the blade up to Lt. Morehouse. For myself, if I kept every blade offerred at the end of battle, I'd have enough to arm a regiment of cavalry. So while I accept this round in support of the victory won, there are many more and larger fights to come until the defenders of the ancien regime are driven back and peace is allowed to reign under our noble l'Empereur.

Until then and at least until we should face one another agin on the field, I raise my glass to you and Captain Bell, an honorable battle, two honorable opponents.

Cheers!
