I am in turn 5 of the Austerlitz 1805 campaign and my opponent claims that 1/3 of his army is marooned on an island with no bridges, and he can't seem to build any with his pioneers (maybe he expects it to happen quickly, LOL). I also notice that the bridges I remember from the Landshut battle are gone, just roads ending at the river. Is this a bug?

I am Andy's opponent and this is exactly what is going on. We are playing the full 1805 Campaign from the Austerlitz CD. I am the Austrians and he is the French. Battle one brings us to a Map that has a town in the south central part of the map called "Moosburg" about 1/3rd of the Austrian forces are stuck, within, or around Moosburg, which is in fact, on an island itself in the south central area.
I have Pioneers and Sappers. Unfortunately, I see no broken bridges to fix, regular bridges, no shallow water to cross and no fords. It seems my men are basically stuck on this god forsaken island of Moosburg???? Is this a bug or glitch?? Can any units actually build bridges? Has anyone encountered this problem/error before? or knows how I can get my men off this Hellish island LOL!!! :x :x :x

If anyone of you have time go into the map and see what I'm talking about, take a look, but then again, even if you open up the map, you might not have the forces set up at the same location on the map as I automatically did.

Of course, maybe I'm totally missing something here :oops:

Your opponent should see a bridge appear over the river immediately after the first turn of repair. The bridge will initially be very weak, but the icon will be visible on the map. Has your opponent toggled the Pioneer units to make the repair?

The scenario itself is saying there are no bridges to repair anywhere on the island. Over the past 5 turns, I have moved my pioneers to various locations on the island to try and fix 'any possible imaginary' bridge(s) lol!!, without luck haha!

Looks like some kind of error to me... I have never played it but I just looked at it and it seems wrong. I would send the game cpf file to HPS Support...

It is the first battle in the 1805 campaign (based on the decisions we made, obviously), I am not sure what scenario it would be. Is there a way to tell this?

I am also having problems re-installing my HPS games (fortunately most of them are already installed,
only Waterloo, Jena, M&P and the two new ones). Clicking on install doesn't work anymore. I wonder if my system problems somehow caused the glitch?

I think the scenario(The first of the Campaign), at least, the map portion, is called 'Moosburg' I'm not sure how you would get further information about the scenario. Sorry about that.

Ok. Thanks to Jim Pfleck for sending the file.

Yes. There is clearly a bug in the scenario. The roads lead to and from open water. No way to repair a non existent bridge so pioneers are not an issue. The Austrians are completely stuck as it is indeed an island.

I suggest you cancel the game and send the file to HPS Support. It's an easy matter to add a bridge using the Editor but not when a scenario is underway.

So pioneers can't build bridges from scratch in the HPS games, only repair them?

Indeed. There has to be a broken or weak bridge in the hex for the pioneers to repair.

You should be able to determine the scenario by opening the CPF file in an editor.

Re: Bridging

Only existing bridges can be worked on. If a scenario designer wants to give players the option of throwing a pontoon bridge across a river he must put a broken bridge there. Of course both players will be able to see the possible site(s) but that's okay realistically since sites for pontoon bridges had to meet a whole list of requirements so most of them would be obvious.

Engineers had to make sure river currents and river beds were good for bridging activity. In our game engine we don't have to worry about these aspects, however...

Other considerations ...

location should be within a few hundred meters of a road (one to three hexes is my rule of thumb) afterall you don't just build a bridge in the middle of nowhere.

area should be clear with firm soil, and flat. In game terms I make sure both sides of the river are the same elevation and has clear terrain between the river and the road access.

Once you start looking at all the maps in the games you'll notice there aren't too many good bridge building sites so putting up a broken bridge to mark them and allow you to build one isn't to odd.
