In 1800 Napoleon went on the offensive in Italy, defeating the Austrians under Baron Melas at Marengo, June 14 after which Melas capitulated bringing the Italian portion of the campaign to an end. Moreau, meanwhile, with 120,000 on the upper Rhine in Switzerland and Alsace went on the offensive against Gen. Kray, also with an Austrian Army of 120,000, who was tasked with the defense of Germany for Austria. Moreau won 4 victories in May and June, slowly advancing toward Munich. The summer saw an armistice which ended in November and after which Archduke John replaced Kray in the renewed conflict. December 3, 1800 Battle of Hohenlinden Moreau, with 90,000 clashed with 83,000 Austrians under Archduke John in the mud, rain, and snow. "The superior speed and energy of the French, combined with considerable good luck, enabled them to surround large portions of the Austrian Army, which was completely crushed." Following up the battle, Moreau marched on Vienna, Gen. Macdonald with another French Army invaded the Tyrol from Switzerland, and Brune advanced from Italy. The result was the Austrians sued for peace on December 25th and the Treaty of Luneville was signed on February 9, 1801. An interesting note to this is that by this treaty, Spain ceded Louisiana to France, which in turn sold it to the United States in 1803. The quote and information comes from "The Encyclopedia of Military History" by Dupuy and Dupuy. Marechal Chuck Jensen Prince de Trevise Comte de Suchet Commander in Chief La Grande Armee |

You know Chuck, you had stated that you were using the muster as a way of "leading by communication". I thought that a bit odd when I read it, but with this post, you are actually using our forums to "lead by example" which is, to me sir, by far the stronger method of leadership. My congratulations to you, sir! I am very glad to see you present in our forums and actively posting before the assembled membership. ![]() ![]() ![]() Bravo, Marechal Jensen! Bravo, sir! I am very happy to see you here today. I hope this very good trend continues into the future. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Interesting to learn that. The early campaigns of the wars really go underappreciated for their complexity and usually when people write about them it is about Napoleon in Italy. I always got the sense that it was mostly a slow back and forth in the Rhine campaign and I had no idea about that battle at all. |

I was told that JTS has two new Napoleonic games in the works and I hope one covers the Italian Campaigns. Battle On.... |

Hear, Hear, Al. I could not agree more. I would love to see the early campaigns represented. ![]() ![]() ![]() Another that is badly needed is a Peninsular title, as the Anglo-Allies are currently relegated to only Campaign Waterloo. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

And that is because I always felt that Spain was where Napoleon really blew it, and that it lead to the failure in Russia. Mostly though it was not Napoleons finest hour. Spain was the only war that was actually the people of the country and not despots went to war. Just my opinion though. Battle On.... |

What would be left to do after Italy and the Peninsula? The 1806-7 Polish campaign? After than, back to Musket and Pike hopefully (I'm dreaming I know). A 7YW title shouldn't be hard though. |
